Back in the early 1970s, glam rock was for the most part slow, stomping, and simplistic. Then, with its banner carried by the more excessive likes of Girl,
Hanoi Rocks and
Guns N' Roses, it became harder and faster, turning for inspiration less to Bowie than to the
New York Dolls and
Iggy & the Stooges. As a result, it became a far wilder and more ferocious beast, with Rachel Stamp at its head in the U.K. Their tracks move at a furious pace, yet are tempered by a melodic sensibility that manifests itself in the yowling vocal of David Ryder Prangley and the sweetly riffing keyboard of Shaheena Dax. Lyrically, they wallow in sleaze, picturing themselves as Byronic corrupters and always equating sex with sin. Though not of the same caliber as Hanoi Rocks and the Dolls, Rachel Stamp possessed a certain dirty charm. And, like some other unpleasant life forms, they will grow on you.
