Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

You might not recognize N'Dambi's name, but if you own Erykah Badu's Live album, you've already heard her voice. Better known as Ms. Badu's favorite backup vocalist, N'Dambi is destined to become one of the brightest stars in today's burgeoning neo-soul movement. The Dallas-based artist's debut creation, Little Lost Girl Blues, was self-released under the auspices of N'Dambi's own Cheeky-I Productions. It's a well-crafted gem that deserves a much larger audience than its limited distribution has cultivated. The album opens with the spoken-word mood composition "Picture This," and from there journeys into explorations of scat-laced jazz ("The Meeting"), textured soul ("Can This Be Love"), and lushly retro R&B ("What's Wrong With You"). The album's signature piece is the achingly beautiful "Sunshine," which pairs the artist's straightforward vocals with a spare acoustic guitar line. N'Dambi's style is more substantial than Badu's, less mannered than Amel Larrieux's, and infinitely more complex than Angie Stone's. All comparisons aside, N'Dambi's talent speaks for itself. --Rebecca Levine

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Music..., April 2, 2002
By "mistermann" (Philadelphia, PA United States) - See all my reviews
N'Dambi tears it down when she backs up Erykah and she really did a fantastic job with her debut CD. "Sunshine" is something that I can play over and over again as well as many others. She's unique and very talented. I hope a big record company picks her up one day. Like her name, the music is unique and deserves a bigger audience. I was hooked when I saw her do a tribute for Nina Simone in Philly at an IAAAM funciton. She had cats standing up and screaming. Get this if you don't have it already....

5.0 out of 5 stars I've listened to this CD almost non stop, July 30, 2000
By Tamara J Shareef (East Cleveland, Ohio) - See all my reviews
This is one of the tightest albums around yet no one seems to have heard of it. I have had this album since January and very rarely has it been out of my CD player. She infuses old school R&B with jazz (The Meeting) and even spoken word (Picture This). If you are looking for an Erykah Badu repeat you won't get it here. N'dambi is her own woman. If you are like me and tired of listening to "cookie cutter" acts where everyone is doing and saying the same pick up Little Lost Girl Blues you won't be sorry.

4.0 out of 5 stars Diamond in the Dark, June 8, 2000
By whatevery (go brooklyn) - See all my reviews
Get this album. N'Dambi is currently known as Erykah Badu's backup singer (the one with the big orange 'fro)but soon the world will recognize her own shine. She is a singer with a gorgeous, bluesy voice and a songwriter with the ability to get to the heart of her emotions. Even her poppy, 70's referenced track, "What's Wrong With You" is a lush, relaxed ballad.

Think Erykah Badu with some sorely needed extra weight. Pick this CD up and pat yourself on the back for discovering "the next big thing" before she happens.
