Rarely does one come across a cross-cultural CD that's not calculated or hokey, but the musicologists/mixmasters of Sorma pull it off with ease on
Mirage of the East. The foursome traveled to India, Mongolia, and Bali to capture the chant, songs, and sounds of those countries' rural communities before returning to Japan to add layers of fat grooves, elements of world music, and keyboards and programming. The result is an exotic trip into the Far East, dripping with leisurely ambience and flourishing with lush jungles of Asian instrumentation. Yasufumi Yamashita from Jalan Jalan (
Bali) contributes to the project and his handiwork can be heard on the feminine "Legend of the Spring," "Bagus Flyer," and the remix of "Mirage" from the earlier release,
Illusion. Overall, lovers of
Uman and world-groove music will find a refreshing listen in this sensual collection.
