The freshest approach and most inspirational content since Sesame Street! Simply wonderful! --New York Post

Product Description
Magicians Penn & Teller host BEHIND THE SCENES, the acclaimed, award-winning PBS series that features interviews with today's leading artists including David Hockney; Julie Taymor; Wayne Thiebaud; David Parsons; Max Roach and many others. Behind the Scenes brings the magic--and the mystery--of artistic creation to video by going behind the scenes to discover the creative process. The full BEHIND THE SCENES COLLECTION is now available on DVD in three exciting volumes or one deluxe 3 DVD Set.

The Three Volume Set Includes:

Painting and Drawing: David Hockney, Wayne Thiebaud and Robert Gil De Montes
DAVID HOCKNEY, the world-famous artist whose work spans painting, drawing, book illustrations, photo-collage and set design, shows how modern artists play with the conventions of perspective, illusion of depth and the vanishing point. Artist WAYNE THIEBAUD shows how volume, shape, feeling and movement can transform a simple line into art. And MATT GROENING, creator of The Simpsons and Futurama, demonstrates the art of comic strips. ROBERT GIL DE MONTES, the celebrated painter, relies on the imaginative and unusual use of color to create art that reflects a keen awareness of his Mexican roots.

Theatre, Sculpture and Photography: Julie Taymor, Carrie Mae Weems and Nancy Graves
JULIE TAYMOR, director of Broadway's The Lion King, and the feature films Frida and Titus, creates an extraordinary kind of visual theatre using puppets, masks and music. The sculptor NANCY GRAVES--who wears a hard hat, works with cranes and often finds her material on the street--gives a dramatic introduction to how sculptors work with balance, often in gravity defying ways. CARRIE MAE WEEMS, the photographer and folklorist, shows how to use composition and content to create meaning in a photograph. WILLIAM WEGMAN also helps out by focusing on one of his playful Weimaraner dogs!

Music and Dance: David Parsons, JoAnn Falletta, Allen Toussaint and Max Roach
DAVID PARSONS, a choreographer for the American Ballet Theatre and former dancer for the Paul Taylor Dance Company, shows how dances can begin with the simplest everyday movements JOANN FALLETTA, one of America's most celebrated young conductors, shows how a symphony orchestra uses layers of sound to create music. Jazz composer and pianist ALLEN TOUSSAINT, with the help of the legendary BOBBY MCFERRIN, demonstrates the art of musical composition by writing a melody at the piano and then recording it in a studio. MAX ROACH, the legendary jazz percussionist and composer, brings the accent to music, using layered and funky rhythms to help listeners feel the beat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Behind the Scenes w/Penn & Teller, May 14, 2007
I teach elementary art. These videos are great! They're not too long and are entertaining enough to keep the kids' attention and interest. I use a different one for each grade and follow up w/a series of projects from painting to photography to sculpture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Have Collection!, September 15, 2008
This DVD set is a wonderful educational tool for any class related to music, dance, art, or drama. I teach all of these classes and have used the videos as a fun "fill in" to aid im my teaching. They are also great to have on hand for a substitute teacher when you don't have a lesson plan prepared!
