Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Not for the novice espresso drinker or for the Starbucks-style café latte fan, this professional espresso machine is the workhorse type found in small cafes throughout Europe. Think single-shots of thick espresso and small cups of cappuccino, as anything else is beyond the realm of this machine.

Briel is Europe's largest manufacturer of pump-driven espresso machines, and its Multi-Pro series is designed to be used with fresh ground coffee or ESE coffee pods, which are small portions of ground coffee pressed between two pieces of food-compatible paper. Coffee pods are packed with the right weight, roast, and grind, so even the inexperienced barista can consistently make great espresso.

This machine features Auto Espresso Flow, an adjustable electric timing control that lets you select serving size in advance. One of two filter holders brews two cups of espresso at a time. Other bright spots include the Turbo Jet frother, equipped with a steam control knob and removable cappuccino nozzle; a self-priming pump fed by filtered suction and water return tubes; a cup warmer; a removable drip tray and grid; and a coffee tamper. The removable 2.5-liter water tank also has a water level indicator viewable from the front of the machine. One downside is that the brew head fits so tightly into the filter holder that it strictly limits the amount of coffee that can be loaded into it, which complicates the brewing process when using fresh ground coffee. --Matthew Evans

Editor's note: This item may arrive with water inside from the manufacturer's pressure test. This is a normal occurrence and doesn't point to a problem with the machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE BEST EVER, May 4, 2000
I've been traveling to Europe for over 25 years and truly am a loverof Espresso coffee. Our family has owned an espresso machine for atleast the last 15 years. Out of all the machines that I've tried, I feel the machine that I currently own, The Multi-Pro 1-Group unit from Briel is the best I've ever tried. I first read about this in the New York Times February 25,1998 where Suzanne Hamlin talked about Espresso Artistry at Home. There she recommended this machine for it's consistently superb crema. It can use either ground coffee or the coffee pods, which are great. I paid over...for my machine so at...it's a real bargain. I rate this machine very high and would highly suggest purchasing it if you are a serious lover of espresso/cappuccino.

5.0 out of 5 stars it's no lie, this is the best espresso machine... ever!, June 9, 2000
By A Customer
having been a coffee jockey in my previous life, i've acquired a discerning taste for good espresso. i'm terribly picky about foam, and what constitutes a good cappuccino. i've tried all sorts of stove top and electric espresso machines, and have never been able to get the flavor or the foam right. with my new Briel mutil-pro series, i feel like a MASTER.

this machine couldn't be any easier to use. the foaming mecahnism creates a perfect cappuccino. it is also very easy to clean.

my suggestion: use bottled water. if you've bought this machine, you are obviously a coffee snob. no need to spoil it with tap water.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally Found the Needle in the Haystack, February 20, 2001
By Jim Scott (Danville, CA) - See all my reviews
My wife is a capuccino enthusiast and have been looking for the easiest espresso machine to make her the best coffee drink. We have been searching for over 2 years in all department stores, coffee houses, and coffee speciality web sites to find the best to fit our needs. During this time, we tried over 15 machines in the house. None caught our desire to want to keep it.

Then, looking for an option for my wife's birthday, I ventured onto ... (the website) to find the Briel Multi-Pro. After liking the look and reading the other reviews, I decided to try just one more. WOW! Were we impressed! The automatic brew cycle, the crema, the frother met all of our needs. To be spending ...(this much) on a kitchen appliance that is used occasionally can be a difficult decision; however, not in this case. It's worth every penny.

A minor problem came with the machine when it arrived. The steam valve would not fully shut off. However, the Briel Service Center was very responsive indicating that within 30 days ...(this website) would be happy to exchange it, or anytime afterwards, Briel would either replace the machine or repair the defective parts. This minor problem does not overshadow our overall satisfaction.
