Product Description

Amazon.com Review
The first version of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire was the third bestselling game of 1999 and continues to fly off store shelves, so a sequel was inevitable. Who Wants To Be a Millionaire: 2nd Edition gives fans 600 more questions and brilliantly captures the feel of the TV show. The only thing missing is the cash.

The game was developed by Jellyvision, famous for its irreverent You Don't Know Jack series of trivia games. Although the designers didn't have much to work with considering how Spartan the set of Who Wants To Be a Millionaire is, they did a masterful job of simulating both the mechanics and the drama of the television show, wrapping everything up in a slick interface that is immediately recognizable.

It seems impossible that players could feel any tension playing Who Wants To Be a Millionaire: 2nd Edition when no real money is at stake, but the game's perfect pacing did a nice job of at least making us think we were playing for cash. That's because it doesn't deliver an immediate response when a question is answered. Just as in the game show, if you answer a question quickly host Regis Philbin will confirm or reject your answer quickly. As the game progresses and the questions get tougher there is more of a pause between your answer and the confirmation. Regis will make some comments, sometimes offering you the chance to change your mind by asking the now grating "Is that your final answer?" as the show's music and a drum roll build tension in the background. The delays were surprisingly unnerving, making us constantly second-guess our answers.

Should a question prove too tough you can always fall back on your three lifelines. The designers polled 50 random people to provide data for the "Ask the Audience" lifeline, and The Reege's friends dispense audio advice for the "Phone a Friend" option. Of course, the 50/50 lifeline is also available.

All these elements coalesce to form a surprisingly fun trivia game, and one of the few available that is more fun to play solo than with a group of friends (although playing cooperatively with a few buddies can be fun). Games rarely take more than 20 minutes, so it's perfect for a quick trivia fix--we just wish it came with more questions. Guess we'll have to wait for the flood of sequels that is sure to follow. --T. Byrl Baker

Pros:

  • Atmosphere provides some tension
  • Near-perfect simulation of the hit TV show
  • Lifelines are implemented well
Cons:
  • Questions quickly run out
  • Doesn't come with a million dollars

4.0 out of 5 stars Mass improvement, but not the overhaul others suggest, May 11, 2000
While this edition does make significant inroads against what ailed the origional _Millionaire_, it's more evolutionary than revolutionary. I've read other reviews here that talk about massive improvements to the fundamental graphics and playabilty of the game, but I'm not sure what they're talking about. In fact, the interface is almost exactly the same as in the original version--which is to say that the 'Fastest Finger' portion is a pale imitation of what happens on the actual TV show, and the 'Hot Seat' graphics are simply replicated. The latter isn't so bad--the 'Big Dance' makes one sweat bullets just like the TV show--but it's highly disappointing that they didn't try to find a way to better approximate the 'Fastest Finger'. Truth be told, they've made that part of the game appropriate for more people than could reasonably be around a computer keyboard.

What they *have* significantly altered are the questions. They are massively more appropriate for the dollar amount being wagered than in the first edition. And there are many, many more of them. The 'playable life' of this game is therefore much greater than the hour's worth of entertainment you could expect to get out of its predecessor.

If you've not bought a _Millionaire_ game, this is definitely where you should start. If you bought the first one and were disappointed, this one will at least be worth the modest purchase price. Personally, I think Disney Interactive (now Buena Vista Interactive) owes all who purchased the first edition a free copy of this second edition, but that being unlikely, I can definitely recommend that you put your toe back into the Disney ocean.

5.0 out of 5 stars Suprisingly Good, April 21, 2000
By "themandgman" (Minneapolis, Minnesota) - See all my reviews
The sequal to the original captures brilliantly the feel of the hit tv show. The first one was repetitve and sometimes the hardest questions were the 100$ ones, with this game, questions actuall make sense for the amounts and it really helps the actual game. Ive played my beta version several times, and am yet to get the same question, something that happened the 2nd time I played it. The game features new coments by regis like "so, you gonna make it your final answer?" and this time you actually see him instead of just his voice. This game has little requirments so it will work great on anybodys computers. With new questions, new voice-overs and new suspense, you can't go wrong, especially for just 20$. Pick this puppy up as fast as possible, because its gonna be HUGE!

4.0 out of 5 stars It's worth the money, June 1, 2000
By Adam A. Zurek III (Souderton, PA USA) - See all my reviews
Millionaire second addition is a good game. I probably would not want to sit around alone playing it but if you have a few people it's fun. I ordered this game for my mother because she lives for Regis and "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?". She isn't really into computer games so I thought she'd like to try it. She absolutly loves the game. It is a very simple game to play. When you start the program it just goes right into the game instead of confusing option pages (confusing for the not so computer literate). The price is right too. I'm sort of surprised that Regis didn't hit me up for $40 or $50 for the game. It would not be worth that price anyway. I have not run into repeat questions on this version, but I have only played it a few times. One thing that I didn't really like was the opening speed round. I thought it could have been a little better. However, I would suggest this game. It's very simple to play even for people who don't know how to use computers. So let's play:

"Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" !
