Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Throughout his long tenure with New Grass Revival, John Cowan sometimes sounded like a frustrated country-bluegrass singer yearning to let loose a rock & roll wail. On this self-titled album, his second solo record, Cowan more often resembles a frustrated pop-rock singer yearning to get back to the country heartland. The album was produced by Cowan's friend and fellow pop-country vagabond Wendy Waldman. The 13 tracks encapsulate Cowan's stylistic reach, from the bluegrassy "My Heart Will Follow You" and the extended instrumental jam "Sligo" to the computerized funk of "Roll Away the Stone" and the arena-rock posturing of "High Above the Powerlines." Several of the better tunes are among the more laid-back: the jazzy "Nothing but the Blues," the slinky "Mississippi Delta Time," and a lovely Celtic-flavored cover of Merle Travis's "Dark as a Dungeon" that shows off Cowan's sirenlike tenor without overwhelming the song. --Rick Mitchell

5.0 out of 5 stars John Cowan, April 25, 2000
By amytych (Rockville, MD USA) - See all my reviews
John Cowan's self-titled CD is an eclectic mix of everything from bluegrass to blues to rock 'n roll. Yet somehow it all blends together and really works. I purchased this CD when it was still on a private label - over three months ago - and I still cannot hear it enough. Cowan has the voice of an angel; powerful and beautiful. There is simply no one better; at least not anyone whom I have ever heard. You absolutely cannot go wrong in purchasing this CD; I guarantee it. It's the best collection of music I have ever heard. The only thing better than listening to this CD is hearing John sing live.

5.0 out of 5 stars He just keeps getting better and better!, April 23, 2000
By A Customer
I've had this CD for 9 months now, as it was available self-published before Sugar Hill released it. I never get tired of listening to it! And every time I listen, my favorite song changes depending on my mood. From the haunting "Dark As A Dungeon" to the soaring "My Heart Will Follow You", the music fills your spirit and makes you glad you're alive. A touch of soul, a splash of bluegrass, a rock beat here and there, the music is difficult to categorize except to place it in the category of "exceptionally listenable" and "must buy"!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Vocals, April 2, 2001
By A Customer
This album captures the greatest singer of our time. See him live! Not only does he sing better than all others, he does so while playing the bass! If you're a musician you know how hard that is. These songs are uplifting and imaginative and John Cowan deserves more recognition than he gets. Truely unbelievable.

I bought this CD thinking it was going to be like "The New Grass Revival" ,but, This CD has more of a rock'n'roll sound to it. But, still is a nice CD.
