Product Description

Amazon.com Review

Outdoor furniture doesn't have to be ruggedly styled to be durable, as Oxford's Chadwick collection proves. This 5-foot garden bench combines Oxford's sophisticated design and superior manufacturing, and the result is yours to enjoy for years. The bench is crafted from Shorea wood, a semihardwood similar to teak, and is ideally suited for outdoor use. While rain and sun can damage lesser woods, Oxford's garden bench will endure season after season in your garden, weathering to a warm shade of gray. Built using mortise-and-tenon joinery (the most structurally sound method), the bench features solid wood dowel construction. This Chadwick garden bench is also available in a 4-foot model. You will receive the bench partially assembled; it only takes about 30 minutes to complete the assembly.

Product Description

With enough space for three to enjoy, the Chadwick Design five-foot garden bench has a smooth and gracefully arching back. Each edge has been hand finished into a smooth and soft edge. The Chadwick benches and chairs are based on traditional English garden benches that have long adorned history's gardens. This Chadwick bench is joined using mortise and tenon joinery, the best joinery available, which will provide for years of sturdy support. This bench is made of shorea, a teak family wood that is more dense and heavy than teak. Shorea requires no finishing and will not rot when left outdoors where rain and sun will damage other lesser quality woods. Left untreated, shorea will weather to a soft warm shade of gray similar to the weathering of teak. Sturdy mortise and tenon construction provides the highest quality joinery that will last for many years. Original color can be maintained by applying a seasonal coat of teak oil.

3.0 out of 5 stars Beauty over comfort, May 11, 2003
By A Customer
This bench looks beautiful, especially after treatment with teak oil, and was easy to assemble (once we figured out we had a connector piece upside down). It could definitely be made more comfortable, however. The back is very straight, and is not very comfortable to sit on for very long. The same is true for the matching chair. This seems like a problem the designers could easily fix. It points out the drawbacks of ordering online, since it would be difficult to return these items, especially after assembly.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great quality, but a little bigger ergonomically could help., August 15, 2002
By John Werner (Cullman, AL USA) - See all my reviews

First I have two of these and they are very high quality in the wood and the build. So what could be better you ask? Well, they seem a bit shallow in the seat and too upright on the back support. What this means is that you can certainly take a nice enough sit for a short time, but if you plan on sitting a while you'll be squirming a bit.

This is my opinion and what this is is just that. I have found at twice the price there are quite a few options so I guess you can't have everything at this competitive price.

I don't regret buying these benches, but would have gladly paid a reasonable bit more if they were more ergonomic. It would not take a lot of expense to do this...just a bit more angle to the back and about one or two more slats width for the seat itself.

I hope the manufacturer reads this because I feel strongly that when your 90% there you should bite the bullet and go that last 10% that can truly make your product an outright "world beater"!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Product, Fast Delivery, Easy to assemble, November 27, 2000
By A Customer
This bench is even more sturdy than previously thought it would be. Very much like the Teak Wood Bench that cost over ($). Better made than the Amish Version that also cost more. I did not care for the coloring when received - it is a shade of natural grayish tone. I am using this bench inside and not outside and wanted it to look more finished. So... I applied Tung Oil to it and it brought out the natural tones of the wood. It now looks like a finished piece of Teak wood furniture. Very pleased.
