Welcome! In today's highly competitive, dog-chew-dog world of Pop, it's hardly enough for a band to simply generate some good old buzz. No sir, todays modern Pop Band must arrive ready-equipped with a clutch of extraordinary songs, then the ability to perform and record same in a way which downright dazzles all who may hear.
Only a handful of bands can accomplish such a daunting-indeed task. I have to believe The Masticators are one of them. Far from merely a quartet of Californians with new guitars, heres a band thats truly a genuine Gestalt phenomenon; a whole far greater than their highly disparate parts should logically allow.
Guitarist, keyboardist Patrick McGrath: genteel, sensitive, yet providing one solid, ever-ready backbone. Bass player Severo: charming and impetuous, tossing an over-the-hoop sense of physical dramedy to the entire proceedings. Drummer, producer Robbie Rist: brilliantly, exceedingly, enigmatically fun, plus a source of undying, unbridled energy. Lead singer, songwriter, guitarist Lisa Mychols: transfixing every ear and eye with one perpetual smile, as the rest of the band beats in perfect synch with her every melodic move. Oh yes - and let us not forget those songs! From the born-to-be-Wilde "Now That You're Gone" and "The One I Wanna Love," to the fully throttled "Radio Police," the calypsodic "He's The One," the deftly reflective "Help Me Dream," the magically girl-group "Never Try," the dangerously surf-punked "Kidnapper Song," and finally the coiled, dramatic tension falling through "The Rain." These Masticators have proven, at least thirteen times over on this single disc alone, their mettle as writers and performers of not only exquisite versatility, but deep-blue, delicious depth as well. So! Care to partake in the sonic treat of the year? Theres certainly plenty here for us to go around, you know.
