Product Description

Amazon.com Review

The Vacu Vin system for food and wine storage is pretty amazing--while some wine lovers debate its merits for saving wine, you just can't argue about having extra-crisp cereal after a month of storage. Specially designed rubber seals are centered in the lid of each storage container--you fit the vacuum into the seal and pump the handle until it becomes too difficult to continue. At this point, all the air has been removed from the container and you can be assured that fresh food is well protected. The wine seals work in a similar manner, except the rubber seal fits directly into the bottle. Results here are mixed--some folks insist that there's no difference between the sealed bottle and one left open, while others insist that the sealed bottle provides a major improvement. Like so much with wine, it may be up to the individual palate--but no harm is ever done by testing. --Jill Lightner

5.0 out of 5 stars Might as well store it right..., July 10, 2000
By A Customer
First grade materials and packaging. Each container has its own stopper allowing the use of all three containers at the same time. These are perfect for coffee, tea, nuts, herbs, and other perishables sensitive to air. The lid sits loosely atop the container until a few pumps of the Vacu Vin pump removes the air and provides an airtight seal between lid and container. These look great and do the job a container was always meant to do. These are of the quality where countertop display is desirable.

4.0 out of 5 stars Well made & almost hassle free vacuum canisters, March 19, 2003
By Wendell C. Cotton "ITGuy" (Martinez, Ca United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had grown very tired of using our Tilia Foodsaver vacuum for canisters. First, the hassle of getting it out of the cabinets and 2nd, the canisters rarely sealed well - or for long. I had bought enough canisters through the years to become fed up.

I tried 4 sets of these, initially, to help preserve our botannical herbs. I buy herbs in bulk - usually 1 pound or more - as part of a diet regimen not only for my wife and I, but for our 5 1/2 year old Doberman who had kidney cancer. It's important to keep these herbs fresh!

Using the hand-held vacuum device is simple and easy. You merely pump it until you no longer hear any air. Typically, this seems to be around 10 pumps though it can go higher depending on the canister size and how full it is. IT WORKS. I also tried it on a couple of bottles of open Chardonnay - both of which were about 1/2 full and after 1 week, they wine was a fresh and tasty as on the day they were opened.

I have ordered 5 more sets as the original 4 were not enough to store everything that we have.

I rated this product a 4 for two reasons.

First, the canisters could be a little larger. Second, it would be nice to have darkened canisters or UV protected so you don't have to worry about damage from light. Minor, I agree, since you can store them in a cabinet but these are my two suggestions.

5.0 out of 5 stars This handy device takes storage one step further, October 30, 2000
By Marc A. Healy (Elgin, IL United States) - See all my reviews

This is great for what you get. I have an electric vacuum sealer that I use all the time, but it cost me over a hundred dollars. Here' you get a good vacuum seal for a fraction of that. The vacue-vin is a very versatile and useful device. You can use it to marinate your dinner in half the time, store perishables in the refrigerator for extended periods, and extend the shelf life of most of your dry goods. Admittedly, most dry goods aren't terribly perishable, but you can save things like crackers, nuts, bread crumbs and cereal flakes for a lot longer with these jars. Buying bulk spices and storing them in a vacuum is definately a good idea- see my tip below about using mason jars. I'd also say that the vacu-vin is great for wine drinkers- if simply corked and refrigerated or left on the shelf a bottle of wine will get stale overnight- the vacu-vin will preserve that half bottle of wine for a few days. (I've heard a lot of people say that the system is pretty much useless with wine, but it's always worked for me).

The company probably wouldn't want you to know this, but using the rubber stoppers in a regular old mason jar that has had a whole drilled into it works well and extends the value of this system immeasureably. My $100+ electric device seals mason jars too, but not at this price.

I'm not saying that this system is superior to my eletric unit, I'm just saying that it does some of the same things for a better price, so for SOME consumers it might be a better option. But I have both and use them quite a bit. My guess is that most people will find this a pretty useful gadget.
