Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Sofia Coppola's directorial debut has no shortage of music. She commissioned the French band Air to record an entire album's worth of material (sold separately) and enlisted the help of former Redd Kross drummer Brian Reitzell to pick other music to support the film. Aside from "Playground Love" and "Ce Matin La" by Air and "Everything You've Done Wrong" by Nova Scotia's fine Sloan (who add horns and backdate by three decades to the 1970s), the soundtrack resembles an anonymous day of 1970s AM radio. Al Green delivers a little bit o' soul with "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?", Todd Rundgren balances progressive rock with a strong power-pop backing ("Hello, It's Me" and "A Dream Goes On Forever") as do 10cc with "I'm Not in Love." Heart nail down the hard-rock end with two of their trademarks from the Dreamboat Annie album. Thankfully, Styx is programmed last, so you can skip the overwrought strains of "Come Sail Away" without difficulty. --Rob O'Connor

5.0 out of 5 stars As Much A 70's Soundtrack As A Film Soundtrack, March 6, 2006
By J. Merritt (Washington-Baltimore Corridor) - See all my reviews
The use of the phrase "Music from the Motion Picture" gives this the feel of a soundtrack, but what it really amounts to is a 70's mix CD, and a darn good one. In addition to "Hello It's Me," one of Todd Rundgren's biggest hits, the CD also includes the rarely-collected ballad "Alone Again (Naturally)" by Gilbert O'Sullivan, the full-length version of "I'm Not In Love" by 10cc (not the edited mix that seems to be on every other 70's collection), and also the version of "Crazy On You" by Heart WITH the acoustic guitar intro. This CD also introduced me to Sloan ("Everything You've Done Wrong"), who sound right at home with a bunch of 70's hits but are actually a modern group. Also included are the two best 'soundtrack' pieces that Air recorded for the movie; "Ce Matin La" (which will sound familiar from the scene where Cecilia ghost-reads her diary) and "Playground Love," the recurring musical motif of the film. Great stuff to pop into the CD player while driving or working on the computer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CD- Puts Me Back In The Movie!, July 1, 2000
By MARTIN D WURST (Los Angeles, California United States) - See all my reviews
Few soundtracks have this affect on me, but "The Virgin Suicides" succeeds in more ways than one...TWO in fact (claps hand girlishly)

The instumental lives up to all the other tracks and I love walking around L.A. in the morning, getting lost in deep depression through wonderful music, particulary "Playground Love-Vibraphone Version" Depression in a good way I assure you. Most of all, a great selection of oldies included on this cd (shows how long I've been around) that put me in a great mood and inspire me to start writing. The Heart songs are great for the more heavy emotions that make you want to beat your head against a stranger's chest... and then there's the more mellow injured-heart songs like Al Green's, "How Do You Mend A Broken Heart?" and my favorite, "Alone Again (Naturally)"

Styx is a perfect end to a perfect cd...an anti-upbeat album all the way- and I love it for that. I prefer powerful music, that makes your soul weep with joy... and this one delivers the goods. If you haven't seen the movie- do yourself a favor. Adios!

5.0 out of 5 stars Retro-Magical, May 9, 2003
By CrimsonRain (Tel Aviv, Israel) - See all my reviews
A beautiful soundtrack of a beautiful pazzling film.
The Retro sounds by Heart, Todd Rundgren, Sloan and more get you back to the magical 70's,
and project the music onto thoughts of the five mysterious sisters in Virgin Suicides.
Air, which made the score also, makes retro-french sounds which gets you even more into a nostalgic mood.
Just sit back and dream of the times you once had, or wish u had.
For me it is a shaft of light in a stormy day.
