Maybe not as good as Smash or Ignition, but still good stuff, June 8, 2005
A Kid's Review
I starting listening to the Offspring in a bad order. I bought Splinter when it came out, liked it, and bought Conspiracy of One, then Americana, then Smash...and wait, wow, Smash is really good! I noticed the difference in their sound right away, and listened to Ignition and Ixnay and fell in love. Americana and after is great, but it's just not the same sound. Anyway, this album is awesome. Some people say it sounds like crap, and if u go back to this time, not everyone's first album was produced amazingly. If you're into heavy metal, look at Metallica's first album, it sounds horrible, but is still awesome. Same goes for this album, its not as perfected as Ignition and Smash, but just as good. This is how i rate their albums...
1. Smash
2. Ignition
3. The Offspring
4. Americana
5. Ixnay on the Hombre
6. Conspiracy of One
7. Splinter
and even though the latter aren't my favorites, i would still listen to them just as gladly as Smash or this album here.

Jennifer lost the war, March 1, 2006
This is a really touching song. "jennifer lost the war" Is not a War song first off. Here's the background for the song to clear things up a little. I read this article years back explaining the influence of the song. Here goes. Back in the late 80's on so cal there was a series of unsolved child kidnappings and murders. The thing is none of this was really big news and got relegated to like page 8 of the papers. Jennifer was one of the girls and another "miss 1565" was another. Her name came from the adress she was found at, no one ever claimed the body. The song was writtn in outrage and a reaction to the uncaring attitude of the media and the lack of outrage in the area.
Honestly I think this song still stands even with the media boom since the 80's every story get's like a few minutes without room for outrage. It's always pass the buck, blame the police, blame the parents, blame video games, music etc.. and then we move on. I'd like to think this song blames society for not making a stand and looking back at itself and treat these kinds of things as tragedies rather than as news stories... but that's just me. anyways great song, great album really, sure it's raw but I think that rawness gives it more gravity and edge. I kind of miss songs that take the chance to offend. They are too few and far between.
Jennifer lost the war today
you'll find her burnt and raped
Through it all she must have wondered
what have I done
But nobody really cares today
the world's a busy place
Guess she must've really sinned now
(Really sinned now)
I guess we're all just soldiers
She was only six years old
Left to die by strangers
Her family waits
And if we're all just soldiers
is it so wrong to be afraid?
Jennifer lost the war
Phoebe lost the war today
there must be some mistake
Say it happens all the time
and it's said and done
Little Miss 1565 Your soul remains unclaimed
Guess you must've really sinned now
(Really sinned now)
Morality won't help her
When she lies silent in a morgue
And all our sorrows just don't count at all
But will the morning headlines
Even say that it's a shame
What are we headin' for
Jennifer lost the war
Seen it all before
Silent on the ground
as he's walking away
And I wonder how many more
everybody take it
like it's nothin' at all
Jennifer lost (,lost ,lost ,lost) the war

Self Titled, March 8, 2006
This is definently nothing like Splinter or Americana it is even very differant from Ignition adn Smash. This album was made before they were signed to Epitaph and they didn't have many fans at all. I believe this sold about 5,000 copies when it was released and Ignition sold 1,000,000 so i guess it shows you how much of a fan base they got.
Before people go ranting on how they hate this cd cause it's so differant you should be warned that at this time The Offspring were listening to like Dark Punk Bands like T.S.O.L and Agent Orange and bands that were somewhat popular in the 80's. This is the reason a lot of their songs are graphic, and maybe a little disturbing but seriously this isn't a bad listen most of you people should actually give it a try instead of just listening to one song adn deciding you don't like it. Try to take a listen to I'll be waiting, and Blackball you may like those.
And also for people wondering why Kill the President isn't on this cd, it's because there was a reissue of this cd in 1995 when they were way more famous and it just wouldn't have been very good to have a song called kill the President when they are so famous so I guess they decided to take it off, butt hey had it in the original version cause no one really knew them
