Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Legend has it that there is a coffeehouse in Japan where people go solely to sit and listen to jazz records on the Blue Note label. DJ Krush brings this kind of obsessively curatorial (and sometimes a bit too laboratory coated) approach to hip-hop derived turntablism. Code 4109 is his fourth full-length release. This continuous 68-minute mix is the first devoted to capturing the effect of his live DJ sets as opposed to his own music in the studio, although he includes some of his own pieces (which are among the most weirdly interesting on the CD). The title of his second LP may have been Strictly Turntablized, but he doesn't lean too heavily on the wildly cut-up, gymnastic style of the North American turntablists such as Invisibl Skratch Piklz, Kid Koala, or Qbert. The first 15 to 20 minutes of the set contain a fairly downtempo blend that includes segments from France's DJ Cam, a bit of Eminem, the vocals from the Beats International/S.O.S. Band "Just Be Good to Me" and a couple of borrowings from jazz-lite pioneer John Klemmer. Tracks from Jazzanova, who hails from Berlin's easy-listening electronic scene, and Canada's Portishead-influenced Esthero continue the laid-back feel, although the latter third of the CD gets a little denser and stranger. --Bob Bannister

5.0 out of 5 stars So good it's almost scary, May 20, 2000
This Cd, for lack of a better word, is amazing. Krush is the premier trip hop DJ, nobody does it better. He is also an artist in the truest sense of the word. I just picked this Cd up yesterday and I probably won't take it out of my player for a long time to come. Not as dark as his last, this has almost a playfull feel to it, like he's challenging any other DJ to try and top him, which I don't think is possible. Krush may not be the fastest, but he is definitely the most artistic and aesthetically rich DJ I have ever heard. Any fan of trip hop must have this Cd. Any fan of the turntables must have this Cd. Any fan of Krush probably already has it. If you're new to Krush, this Cd will make a dedicated fan out of you.

5.0 out of 5 stars You're insane if you don't buy at least two copies, June 5, 2003
This, to put it simply, is the single finest trip-hop DJ set ever cut to CD. It's been in my regular rotation for years...

Strictly classy, kickin' beats. No ifs, ands, or maybes. Turntable wizardry of the highest calibre. Dare we call a DJ an artist? If you do, make sure your list includes Krush.

Dope.

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh God this is beautiful, May 1, 2000
DJ Krush is an incredible talent as an artist, but he really shines here as a DJ. I have a mix album he did for Ninja Tune from a few years ago and it does not come close to comparing to this. Krush weeves and molds a mostly flawless mix here with interesting transitions and even some added flavor on some of the tracks themselves. For example, on cut #9, Krush adds a sample of a Bulgarian choir and orchestra for some added spice. For those of you who are Krush fans, this is an absolute must. Even newcomers to Krushworld should enjoy this to fullest. Just pop this bad boy in and let it roll. The Jazzanova and Esthero cuts are my personal fave, but this entire mix has shown me the meaning of bliss.
