Editorial Reviews

From Rhythm Magazine

The Wicked Tinkers blow a relentless bagpipe that crawls under your skin-under your fingernails at times-dogged at every trill by a big fat snare drum that's as driven as the pipes. There is also a bodhran, but it's poorly recorded, sounding like a beaver swatting its tail. A guitar-and-vocal tune is mixed dreadfully and not sung with the charm or gusto of the piping and drumming. Still, this is an indie undertaking, most readily available via Amazon, so some technical glitches may be overlooked. And the bagpipes and snare stomp with such power and conviction that beaver-tail bodhran and overly earnest vocal can be forgiven.

Product Description

HAMMERED is the Wicked Tinkers second CD and gets its name from the second tune on the album, "Hammer on the Anvil" (or that persistent pounding you hear listening to their drums and pipes). There are a few tunes and songs that could be considered slow and beautiful, although the Tinkers don't advocate such things. If you liked the first CD, we think you will love this one. The Wicked Tinkers say "Most tunes on this CD are from the Highlands of Scotland, where the music we love was born. A few of the tunes are Irish (Warren's heritage), who we feel are brothers to the Scots. Some tunes are Canadian (where our own John MacAdams hails from), a very Scottish place. A wee bit from Australia rounds out the lot." "We are thankful to all our fans for their support of this unusual music. It is they who help us continue."

5.0 out of 5 stars Feel the spirit of the highlands!, March 20, 2002
By A Customer
The Wicked Tinkers represent the real spirit of the Highlands. It's not the music you hear from the pipe bands on the field. It's what you'd hear at the Caleigh afterwards. It's wild and it is [sensual]! You feel the drums in your body and hear the pipes in your soul. The addition of Wayne Belger on the didgeridoo adds a primal element that sets them apart and makes the music truly unique. Keep your eye on these boys, they're going to go all the way!

5.0 out of 5 stars Drums and pipes to move you, June 21, 2001
Literally! This is my all-time favourite CD to pop in and drive to! 'Radar Love' is a rollicking, drum filled sensation. And let's not forget the all time requested 'Amazing Grace/Scotland the Brave' combo! If you love pipes and drums, then Wicked Tinkers will fill your need. And if you ever get the chance to see them live, DO! Even better with new members.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wicked Tinkers Rock!, August 4, 2000
By Lisa Krause "dijon46" (Irvine, CA USA) - See all my reviews
I saw this band at the San Diego Highland Games in June and was hooked! I didn't even have an interest in bagpipe or Celtic music before that, but Wicked Tinkers convinced me to explore a whole new genre of music. I don't know of a higher compliment that can be paid a musician. If you like bagpipes, Celtic music, rock, punk, folk, or heck, just about anything else, you should check these guys out. I prefer this album to their first but they are both extremely well done. From the hilarious "The Farmer" to the thumping "Those Marching O'Neills," HAMMERED takes bagpipe music to a whole new level and expands its appeal. Give it a try; you won't be disappointed!
