A wicked ice princess sets out to freeze and capture Earth for her planetary collection. But Sailor Moon and her tight-knit group of gal pals will have nothing of the sort. Paced more for the love story fan, this episode focuses on a handsome young astronomer, Kakeru, who discovers a mysterious crystal needed by Princess Snow Kaguya to carry out her plan. Soon after finding the crystal, Kakeru develops a deep friendship with Luna (Sailor Moon's cat), a friendship that eventually leads to the Sailors' discovery of the Earth's predicament and to each character's discovery of the tremendous powers of love and justice--all in about an hour.

Despite its slower pace, this feature incorporates all the positive qualities other Sailor Moon episodes share: sharp, eye-catching artwork; humorous but heartfelt communication among the girls; an understandable plot line; and plenty of flashy transforming. Further enhancements include an intelligent soundtrack (a nice balance of kooky sci-fi and seriously beautiful tunes) and the introduction of the "Outer Senshi." This slightly older, more mature group of young women--Sailors Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto--join our regular band of bubble-spraying, crescent-beaming skirt tossers to melt the ice princess once and for all. The dubbed movie (tagged with the new title of Hearts in Ice) is an edited version of the subtitled film. Some language and violence (a few frames) have been altered. Due to the inclusion of mild nudity (imagine a spinning, naked Barbie), parents may want to think twice before offering this movie to fans younger than 6. The DVD is of the uncut version but also has the English language dialogue. --Liane Thomas

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent movie, but get the right reasons for liking it, April 2, 2000
First, I would like to say what are these two talking about? A viewer March 30, 2000 taurus4 from United States March 25, 2000

I don't like americanization one bit, what's the point besides shutting yourself in your own culture and making the excuse because you saw something from another country it makes you feel better. If you want the full experience of stepping outside your culture go all the way. "Do or do not, there is no try" -Yoda.

Anyway since this is NOT a forum and a review I will tell what IS in this movie, assuming that Pioneer does an excellent job with this movie as they did with SMR.

Clever undertitle.. subtitle..? What ever it is called. Hearts in Ice. That's got a good ring to it. and excellent choice of art for the cover.

The movie is about a Princess named Ice Kayuga (not to be confused with the Starlight's Princess Kakyuu) returns to Earth to get her revenge on the Moon Kingdom that cast her out. (Queen Serenity did with the Silver Crystal)

Luna happens to be sick on the day of the invasion. The attack sequences are redone and the Outer Senshi (fan term) appear)

Luna falls in love with a Scientist she wishes to be human at the same time the soldiers are fighting Ice Kayuga.

_Super_ Sailor Moon gives Luna a night to be human and travel with the scientist to the moon (which is her dream) She poses as Kayuga (the legend of the Moon Princess, look it up on amazon) Even though she knows her love is futal she gives that to him. He returns to his girlfriend and she returns to Artemis who was worried about her. (It's on Hitoshi Doi's site... the summary anyhoo)

There is nothing like watching the movie on the big screen. It made me cry several time.. at first with delight at finally being able to see it and later because of the plot. It is touching and pulls on your heart strings (I know it does for the guys too though they won't admit is a readily).

I like this movie a lot. The plot isn't just Luna, it's the relationship between Luna and Usagi. Even if you don't love Luna that much this movie will give you plenty of other things to look at. Plus it will give you more respect to Luna.

Oh.. and it should be noted that Sailor Moon R movie is the relationship between Usagi and Mamoru and her Senshi (to a lesser degree). Sailor Moon SS is about the relationship between Usagi and Chibiusa. (I'll review that one when it gets out)

Somehow I doubt Pioneer is going to change the Outer's names, unless they work with Dic on that one and decide too. If they are going to change them, I wouldn't object really, I'll note it. I rather like Alex (Haruka), Michelle (Michiru), and Susan (Setsuna).. though the ones on the Irwin boxes are clever because the definition of the names are the same as they are for their Japanese names.. which is nice.

Helen semes to fit for Hotaru (think about the mythology for Helen of Troy) but she's not in this movie.

I hope that helps you to think a bit more about this movie. I do encourage you to buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great movie for ALL ages., November 29, 1999
I watched Sailor Moon S, the movie and I think it's a beautiful expression of how strong love and friendship can really be. The plot is quite understandable, even to those that are young, and I really don't agree with previous reviews that say that this movie isn't suitable for little kids... that's rediculous... the so called "nudity" is very very obscure and a small child wouldn't even think of it... I sincerely do not know why some people make such a bid deal over nothing. Eitherway, Luna's little romantic escapade is sad at times, but it will warm your hearts... and of course, who could forget Haruka, Michiru and Setsuna, the Outer Soldiers... they're the best and they unintentionally steal the show at every appearance. This is one movie worth buying for all you Otakus out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Some bad parts, but is it worth buying? Yes, in a nutshell, May 28, 2000
By A Customer
I have the dubbed and the sub, and just to make things easy, I'll seperate the bad, the good, and the treats into three parts:

The BAD: Uranus's attack phrase was so garbled that there's no possible way you can hear it for the first time. Neptune was OK, but as previous viewers say, it should have been a bit more feminine. And yes, the voice of Pluto in the DiC series should have been in the movie, but out of all the phrases of the three, she's the only one who yells it out clear. Oh well, let's pray the dub of Super S turns out better. And did anyone else get tempted into calling "Sailor Mini Moon"/ Rini "Mini Me" from Austin Powers? And did anyone else want to fast-forward the part when Sailor Moon gets preachy about the significance of life? Another thing to beware is that there's no background music during the battle scenes in order to make the final showdown more dramatic(Like "The Power Of Love" in the R-movie). As a final note, I don't know what's worse: the fact that the Snow Dancers aren't that scary or the fact that they holler and "yi-yi-yi-yi" like Xena on the WB network.

The GOOD: We actually get a first peek on the dub's version of Rini's transformation and Sailor Moon's heart scepter attack before the use of the Holy Grail("Moon Spiral Heart Attack") and after("Rainbow Moon Heartache Reform"). At least Pioneer knows what to leave in. Plus, it's nice to see the transformations and the attacks of the Outer Sailor Scouts. As a final touch, you get to see what Luna looks like when she turns into a human being.=)

The TREATS: Advantages to buying the movie? It teaches the lesson that if you love someone enough, you know when to let them go. And you'll probably feel sorry or relate for Luna when she realizes she can't love the astronomer because she's a cat and not a human being, and you'll realize how precious love is when you see Artemis support Luna even though she ignores him, and how he becomes crushed when she doesn't realize that he loves he for the way she is. Moral: if not too preachy, it's that love is unconditional, and once we lose it, we realize how much of it we have and need in our life. Great thing to teach for parents in case they have little kids who don't understand this. Oh yeah, and there's one hilarious scene when a Snow Dancer is chasing Serena and Rini, and they do the "Look-Out-Behind-You!" trick and when the dancer turns away to see what they're pointing at, both the girls escape to transform.(I was cracking up seeing on how funny this part was).

So, is it worth it to buy the dub? I'd say yes because the bad parts are tolerable, and it will make you want to watch it over again, and this is the only movie that shows the Holy Grail and the Outer Sailor Scouts' transformations. Plus, you'll probably have a few tear-jerkers when you see Luna's predicament; that's good for you emotional people out there.
