Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

Capturing American radio airwaves with his stunning acoustic masterpieces, "The Year of the Cat" and "Time Passages," Al Stewart is one of music's most accomplished troubadors. Heavily influenced by Bob Dylan, Stewart's silky sweet voice and intricate songcraft is a remarkable testament to his prodigious talent.

Songs: On the Border, Year of the Cat, Time Passages, Palace of Versailles, Valentina Way, So Ho (Needless to Say), Song on the Radio.

Superb musicianship and artistry come blazing through in these rare and exciting performances of artists and groups of the '60s, '70s, and '80s. These are the international stars that were part of the televised monthly music show Beat Club and MusikLaden. Filmed in Germany at the television studios of Radio Bremen, MusikLaden (originally known as Beat Club) became a TV classic not only for the fans, but also for the artists who took part. There was no time limitation on song length so artists were able to perform live concert versions of their most popular hit songs.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Al Stewart's Fan from CA, November 26, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Best Of Musikladen (DVD)
I was stunt to see the DVD on the store shelf. Being Al Stewart's fan since "Year of the Cat", I bought it with great feelings. The band is "Shot in the Dark" in his '79 album "24 Carrots." The songs are well chosen, especially "The Palace of Versailles" and "Valentina Way." I enjoy watching Peter White with the guitar in "On The Border" as much as I did in Al's concert in San Francisco back in 1983. I highly recommend this DVD to anyone who enjoys the sound of guitars, sax, and piano.

5.0 out of 5 stars More Al Stewart DVDs please...., June 12, 2000
This review is from: The Best Of Musikladen (DVD)
I have this DVD and loved it! It is about time that someone out there put out something to showcase Al's remarkable talent.. The Video was a little muddy in some places, but the show was still great. Time Passages and Year of the Cat are my 2 personal favs. I hope that there are more DVDs with Al Stewart soon... Good music from my childhood. Beautiful memories come back to me in these songs...

5.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable 1979 Performance by Al for German Television, August 20, 2002
By Lisa A. Compton (Exton, Pennsylvania USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Best Of Musikladen (DVD)
I purchased this DVD a few years ago in anticipation of purchasing a DVD player someday. The DVD sat on a shelf until last week when it was the first DVD I played on my newly acquired DVD player.

I enjoyed the performance thoroughly. The video was satisfactory although the sound in some sections was distorted. The sound issues seemed to be mostly toward the beginning of the DVD. The DVD video quality seemed quite good to me. Since this is a reproduction of an original television broadcast, the original media was more than likely videotape, as opposed to 16 or 35mm motion picture film. The DVD quality is about what I would expect from a reproduction of a television broadcast videotape.

I wish there were more satisfactory quality visual recordings of Al's work during the 1970s, '80s and '90s. Unfortunately, everything else I have seen to date is amateurish and poor quality.

In summary, I recommend this DVD to anyone who appreciates Al's work.
