Product Description

Amazon.com Review
Don your helmet and strap on the shoulder harness--Demolition Racer: No Exit is taking you for a ride, and it's not going to be a smooth one. As a matter of fact, with 16 cars on the track and nobody worried about paint jobs, it's likely to be downright bumpy.

Demolition Racer: No Exit will delight gamers who never can keep their car on the road, as it rewards hazardous driving and openly encourages slamming other motorists into walls or--better yet--land mines.

The game offers two distinctly different leagues. In the demolition leagues, ranking is determined by the damage points that you inflict on your fellow drivers, multiplied by a value that's assigned to the place in which you finish the race. The No Exit mode puts drivers in an arena, à la gladiator, with the winner being the last moving car. Here, the game really shines, as cars go flying hood-over-heels and perform maneuvers that would make crash-test dummies wince.

Demolition Racer: No Exit shows vehicle damage in real time. See your hood crinkle, then pop up and flap like a wounded duck, before it flies over the roof. While the action is fast and furious, however, the graphics don't reflect the abilities of the Dreamcast fully, with vehicles that appear somewhat boxy, and physics that seem unrealistic when compared to other top-notch racing games. In addition, the vehicles are generic, with no brand names.

Once you've turned off the predictable hard-rock soundtrack, the sound effects in Demolition Racer: No Exit are excellent, from the screams of tortured metal to the screech of a fender that's kissing a wall. --Benjamin Reese

Pros:

  • Real-time damage shown on vehicles
  • Very realistic sound effects
  • Unlockable minigames
Cons:
  • Graphics could be better
  • Generic, unlicensed vehicles

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Addictive, November 13, 2000
By "iramos" (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
We tend to like the driving games best, and this one is at the top! Terrific graphics, exceptional soundtrack and really fun game play. Still have to try it with the racing wheel, though. Personally, we like it even better than Crazy Taxi. You can satisy your road rage impulses in both, but this one gives you the satisfaction of destroying others on the road - you'll see the smoke and fire coming out of your competitors, and nothing satisfies like a good t-bone or even landing right on top for an instant kill! (Yes, we are adults) A must have!

5.0 out of 5 stars At last, a PLAYABLE racing game that's actually fun!, November 12, 2000
I used to play demolition racer on a friends Playstation and thought it was great especially in two player mode. So I'm really glad they've put it onto the Dreamcast. The graphics are vastly improved and there is NO slowdown even in two player mode! I'm not much of a racing 'simulator' fan, so I like that with Demolition Racer you can get up to full speed smash into someone and recover really quickly so you're always in the thick of the action. One of the new aditions is 'pickups', which really adds tactics to the gameplay. There's been loads of times where I've almost been dead, preying that I can find an armor or shield pickup before someone smashes into me. There's also loads of game modes, cars, and sub-games to unlock so it should be quite a while before it's completed. If you want a different kind of racer, buy this game!

5.0 out of 5 stars Do You Like Cars? Thought So. Do You Like Destroying Them?, December 22, 2001
By Nate (Fort Mill, SC) - See all my reviews
Thought so, too. This game is the ultimate stress reliever. If you're under a lot of pressure, is there anything more gratifying than destroying hordes of cars? Not unless they create a game where you can strap dolls to firecrackers.

The graphics are great, but not incredible. It's no Gran Turismo 3, but it's still pretty, with a good framerate to boot.

The soundtrack is ho-hum. At least it keeps the action going.

You'll keep wanting to come back and play it. Thank you, I'm done. Buy and destroy, friend. Buy and destroy.
