Editorial Reviews

From the Actor

Sensei George Alexander

Product Description

Finally an instructional video on Kendo, Japanese Swordsmanship.

This exciting video fully explains the techniques of modern Kendo. Kendo is both an art, and an exciting sport, and its roots lie deep in the culture of Japan and the spirit of the samurai.

This is Kendo features Sensei George Alexander, a world renown martial arts teacher and author. He fully explains how to wear the dogu (protective Armour), the use of the shinai (bamboo sword), and dojo etiquette.

This video explains fighting postures, stances, footwork, basic strikes, warm up drills (Kiri Kaeishi) prearranged sparring drills (Yakusoku Renshu) combination strikes (Nidan/Sandan Waza) and Sword Point Control. Also included are many never before seen on video advanced sparring (Keiko) techniques, and an explanation of Zen concepts used in swordsmanship and much more! This is the Kendo Video you have been waiting for!

1.0 out of 5 stars Don't Buy this, December 13, 2004
You can learn what not to do from this video. The instructor didn't have the right skill or experience enough to teach. Not to mention the poor quality of video. I watch for about 30 minutes, and that was enough for me to pack it back and shipped it right back to Amazon.com. Amazon.com charged me $17 for the return processing fee.

1.0 out of 5 stars Low quality in every way, March 4, 2003
The quality of this tape is extremely poor. It is pretty much just a home video. The colors pulse, the audio is poor and there is an echo through the entire tape.

The quality of the instruction seems very poor as well. The introduction to the material is very unorganized, unplanned and difficult to follow. He is constantly going off track.

The shooting is all done inside a small space with no variety. There are no graphical aids or close ups. Much of the fighting is shown from the side, so you can't see what's happening very well. It would be a lot better at an angle over a shoulder.

Finally, this video is more like having a short talk with someone in a bar about Kendo. It's an ok overview, but it is seriously lacking. I am going to try and return the movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kendo Club, December 1, 2000
By A Customer
The review of John regarding the quality of the material presented in this tape is inaccurate. Dr. Gordon Warrener, the hightest ranking american Kendo Black belt in the world and a member of the All Japan Kendo Federation, reviewed this tape. He has endorsed it as an excellent tape and a true representation of modern kendo. We will defer to his expertise rather than John's.
