Product Description

From Children's Software Revue® -- "Subscribe Now!"

This all-new version of the JumpStart Adventures 4th Grade stars kids, Sally and TJ, and their dog, Gizmo. Their task is to explore an old mine, recover a stolen treasure map and catch a villain. If this sounds like a difficult mission, that's because it is, and the tedium of the gamely contributes to the challenge. Each level of the game requires hours of play to advance. In the first, children travel through three open tunnels- each with a math game and another activity that tests geography, art, history or spelling. These games are innovative, educational and fairly fun at first. Kids have to use a laser to cut out correctly spelled words, for instance, or solve math problems to turn on lights in the tunnels. Unfortunately, the games must be played so many times in order to advance that kids lose interest- we had to beg them to play! The second segment of the game is also tedious, with only two types of games that must be played over and over again. In all, the content is solid. A total of 11 games drill 30 skills, and there are 200 tutorials if kids are having difficulty in any subject. Other nice features are the optional pretest that can be used to set skill levels and the thorough record-keeping system. It's also great to see a daring and intelligent female main character. Weaknesses include some problems with responsivity and some annoying music loops, in addition to the afore-mentioned repetitive format. Only the most dedicated, persistent kids will stay with this mystery to the end.
Teaches: math, reading, science, history, geography
Age Range: 9, 10, 11

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun! She forgot she was learning!, November 19, 2000
By R. Teter (Virginia, USA) - See all my reviews
I recently bought Jump Start 4th Grade for my daughter. She loved it! It quickly became her favorite computer program. She introduced two friends to the program and they went out and purchased it as well! She prefers this computer game over television, so it was well worth the money. You won't be disappointed!

3.0 out of 5 stars My boy actually doesn't really like it., January 5, 2003

I've usually been quite pleased with Jumpstart products, but my boy who is usually quite easy to get to go play educational games doesn't like this one. He says it keeps sending him back to the same thing over and over even if he gets a perfect score. I think he would have just liked a little more variety.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lots of fun, but too short, June 10, 2009
A Kid's Review
Heya, I'm StoryMaker. I've been a JumpStart fan since my Kindergarten days. I was a little over 4th Grade when I played JumpStart 4th Grade, but it was still educational and fun. The games were intuitive, creative, and rather entertaining. The content was very appropriate for 4th Grade learning, and the storyline was thought out pretty well with great characters. However, it was, as my title suggests, not as long as I would've liked, and more content could've been put into the software. It was a nice game, but it ended quickly, tiring rather fast. Also, though the storyline was fair, it wasn't perfect. My main problem is the weirdness of the dog - he's just an odd pooch. Plus, though the storyline has merit, it's not very deep. It has a mystery theme, but the mystery is pretty short and rather shallow, partially due to the fact that the culprit is random. The other thing is there isn't much "mystery" to the mystery. Most of it is relatively clear from the beginning. (Not like ClueFinders - their mysteries really are mysteries.) Overall, it really is a fun and creative game, with plenty of fun and educational activities (I especially thought the history & science tile game was very educational), but it's not very long, so I suggest you try to check it out from the library before buying it. You could also try to buy the "advanced" version, which is the same product with bonus discs so there's more content. Meanwhile, check out the other JumpStart products and ClueFinders too. Signed, StoryMaker. "Gotta trust the kid's review!"

4.0 out of 5 stars It's great but not OS X
Beware mac users - if you don't have Classic don't get it.
Otherwise - it is a great way to get kids going - and for parents the self assesment is a good way to level set
