Product Description

Amazon.com Review

To learn about the man behind the Zelda game series, read our profile of Shigeru Miyamoto.
The story of Majora's Mask begins with Link having a brief yet strangely violent encounter with a mask-wearing stranger deep in the heart of the forest. The masked figure kidnaps Link's beloved horse, Epona, and his Ocarina, and Link falls down through a dimensional warp hole. When he wakes up, our pointy-eared hero finds he has been turned into a Deku Scrub! Now he must fight against time, not to mention many other foes, to save his friends.

Playing as a Deku Scrub, you'll know how Luke, Obi-Wan, and Hans Solo felt as they walked into the Mos Eisley bar in Star Wars. Deku Scrubs, it seems, aren't welcomed in the village, and no one pays them any attention. But being a Deku Scrub has its advantages--like being able to shoot nuts out of your wooden nose (not as gross as it sounds), using flower petals to propel yourself into the air, and lots of other neat trickery.

While the landscape looks somewhat familiar, you'll notice a gigantic moon that seems to be falling down toward the earth. That's no optical illusion; it really is falling to earth! For that reason, Link is also battling time. Each group of challenges must be executed within a 72-hour window before the moon crashes down, destroying the world of Hyrule (and you thought you had your hands full just dueling with Gannon).

A sophisticated-looking sundial on the base of the screen displays the game's day and the time. The tough part is that a day on the game clock (meaning 24 hours) takes place every 15 minutes in real time. Of course, you're not going to be able to complete the game in under an hour. Link is trapped in a three-day time loop. If the end is near, all Link needs to do is to play the Song of Time and the three-day cycle starts all over again, with Link retaining all of the information and items he's collected. If this is confusing, watch the Harold Ramis movie Groundhog Day and you'll understand.

As you might have guessed, the masks play an essential part in the new gameplay system. Collecting certain masks will give Link special powers and will transform him into a variety of different characters.

Thankfully, the weapon targeting system and battle style is the same as Ocarina of Time (which is to say, perfect). Expert game designer Shigeru Miyamoto has always been fond of creating new gameplay mechanisms in the past, so it's great that the team decided to leave the incredible Z-targeting feature in.

The new time-based element might seem confusing at first, but it introduces an incredible amount of depth to an already deeply challenging game. It's innovations like this that have kept Nintendo among the world's premier gaming developers for 20 years. Plus, with older innovations (such as the rumble pack) and newer ones (expansion pack galore, baby!) the list of positives just keeps getting better and better. --Todd Mowatt

5.0 out of 5 stars Majora's Mask, July 20, 2000

This game is soooo cool. You have three days and nights, to find Majora's Mask and save Termina from being destroyed by the falling moon. In this game, all of the minor characters in Orcarina are better explored and new character's are also introduced. As well as Majora's mask, you have to find 24 other masks.Another cool thing about this game is that Young Link can use some of the weapons that were previosly only available to Adult Link. But the neatest thing of all about Majora's mask is the ability to turn in to different things depending on which mask you are wearing. The Deku mask allows you turn turn in to a Deku , the Zora mask in to a Zora and the Goron in to a Goron etc..One of the questions you might have about this game is whether Link can grow up as in Orcarina. Well, I don't want to spoil it for you but I'll tell you this....The final battle is worth playing the game for.

5.0 out of 5 stars The moon hits all Zelda fanatics, August 20, 2000

For all who were awestruck after completing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, they will be completely spellbound when they pop Nintendo's brand-new sequel into their N64 machines. They will enter the world of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask.

In this stunning addition to the Zelda series, the young hero Link will meet a mischevious Skull Kid, who is under the evil power of Majora's Mask, and leads him into a strange world parallel to Hyrule, known as Termina. But he has entered at a bad time. He learns that in three short says, the moon is going to crash onto Termina, destroying everything in its wake.

Link's quest is then unfolded before him--he must unfog the mystery of Majora's Mask, and somehow stop the moon from falling. Throughout the game, he will collect 20 different masks, each giving him a special power. Some of them even allow him to transform into different creatures. But you'd be surprised at how quickly three days can go by...

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask is expected to come out October 26, 2000 in the U.S., and a few days later in other countries.
