Although billed as "The Movie," this edition consists of the four episodes of the computer-animated OAV (original animation video) cut together and edited for airing on the Cartoon Network. Most of Earth's population drowned when the mad genius Zorndyke began meddling with the planet's polar alignment. The survivors cower in half-drowned cities and undersea bases, battling Zorndyke's robots and hideous mutants; Kino, a dedicated young pilot, draws Hiyami, an alienated ex-submariner, back into the war. Based on a manga by Satoru Ozawa, Blue Submarine offers lots of computer-generated effects, but little in the way of coherent plot and character development. Hayami's conversion from hard-bitten veteran to peace advocate seems improbable, as does the prospect of seeking peace with a villain responsible for 10 billion deaths. Blue Submarine will appeal primarily to hard-core computer animation fans and devotees of Water World. The Cartoon Network policy of not showing what it construes as violence further weakens the story. Hayami doesn't see his old friend Katsuma writhing in agony from Zorndyke's "beast mutation," removing much of his motivation to rejoin the submarine forces. The gigantic Musuca no longer dies in a sea stained by its own blood, eliminating the series' one genuinely poignant moment. Eliminating tobacco use produces some unintentionally comic moments: Hayami flicks his lighter and touches the flame to nothing. The four OAVs are available separately in their uncut format. Rated 13 and up: robot versus robot violence and grotesque imagery. --Charles Solomon

2.0 out of 5 stars Marketing Sleaze, July 11, 2000
By Rick deCamara (Rockwall, TX USA) - See all my reviews
I absolutely loved this anime when I saw it, but I cannot and will not give my approval to a simple and sleazy marketing ploy. There are 4 episodes in all, each 30 minutes long. They took the path of the greedy and put 1 episode on each tape or dvd. Personally, I couldnt care less how they market tapes, but one of dvd's strongest points was media size. Even with all the whiz-bang animation and video quality (which is quite good), I dont doubt for a second they could fit all 4 episodes onto 1 disc. They coudlve made it a "flipper" or put it onto 2 discs if they felt image quality would be compromised. It just makes me sick that they would do this. Oh yeah, fyi, the music is some of the worst in the not-too-stellar history of anime music. Overall, cool story, great use of cell/cgi animation, horrible marketing, horrible music. A pass, unless its in the bargin bin.

5.0 out of 5 stars state of the art, October 24, 2000
By A Customer
This four volume series is exceptional--I like it as much as Macross Plus with the drama, the dialogue, and of course, the action and mechanical designs. Computer graphics and cell animation merge seamlessly. The characters are deep and diverse. The setting is similar to Voogies Angel and Agent Aika (or Waterworld) , while the theme of a scientist creating human-animal hybrids or mutants reminds me of The Island of Dr. Moreau. Even though each DVD is only about 30 minutes long (this last volume is longer), as long as I don't pay more than twenty dollars this collection is worth it. Cartoon Network is going to show this series Nov 6, but for best picture quality this is best enjoyed on DVD. The dubbing was done by Coastal Carolina--my favorite sound studio. This series gives not only beautiful graphics and glorious explosions, but asks the nature of humankind's tendency for conflict and violence.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, but too short!, May 4, 2000
By "gugesd" (New York) - See all my reviews
Because of its extensive use of CGI, I had low expectations of this title. Boy, was I surprised! This is pure eye candy. I find most CGI anime released lately to be visually repugnant, but the CGI is extremely well done here and it melds with the cel animation flawlessly. My only gripe is the running time. Only one 30 minute episode on each DVD! I never buy such short videos, but Blue Sub No. 6 came so highly recommended that I decided to take a chance, and I'm glad I did.
