On her third album, Vania Abreu, the sister of the more famous Daniela Mercury, makes a strong claim for inclusion among the top singers in MPB, the Brazilian popular music. A tribute to her native Bahia region, it's melodic, a set that sways as only Brazilian music can, from the sizzle of "Mais de Mim" to the sensual samba of "Conto de Areia." While it's her voice with its happy quality that carries the music, the arrangements that frame the material are never cluttered, and put her in marvelously sympathetic settings. Like fellow Bahian Maria Bethiana, Abreu is a vocalist who can put her own unique stamp on a song, but this is a new generation, far removed from the Tropicalia movement of the '60s. Abreu has a very personal vision to her music, quite rooted in Bahia, with its soulful influences from singers such as Margareth Menezes, but its face is turned firmly toward the new century. --Chris Nickson

5.0 out of 5 stars A great voice from Bahia, February 10, 2002
By A Customer
I stumbled onto this album at a listening booth of a local music store and immediately bought it after listening to the first track. Vania has a marvelous voice of clarion clarity with an exactitude that reminds me of a great trumpeter like Clifford Brown. Listen to how she handles chromaticism of the first track "Mais de Mim". Throughout, her emphasis is on musicality and clarity rather than "expression", without, however, losing naturalness and warmth of feeling. Arrangement is also attractive, understated and more folksy than other (admittedly small number of ) MPB albums I'm familiar with, and often with a modal flavor. My favorite track is "Anjo da Velha Guarda" which I'm in a habit of playing twice before proceeding with the rest of the excellent album.

4.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Voice, Clear & Classic Artist, October 16, 2001
By "moijill" (NY, NY USA) - See all my reviews
I was fortunate to be in Salvador do Bahia in December '99 and see Vania Abreu in concert with her "much more famous and hip" sister Daniela Mercury. I walked away from the wonderful show actually enjoying Abreu more than Mercury.

So, I got back to the states, bought the CD from Amazon and fell in love completely with her music. She has a beautiful tone, range and is PERFECT if you are studying or learning Portuguese because her diction is AWESOME!

My favorite songs? "Seio d Bahia," Mais de Mim," and "O Perdao." I'd describe it as a mixture of easy-pop, folk, jazz and cajun!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have, July 31, 2000
By Lusa (São Paulo, SP Brazil) - See all my reviews
If you are interested in trully brazilian music, you must have this album. It is a masterpiece. Vânia knows how to sing songs with her voice and heart. She combines modern music with brazilian traditional roots like nobody else.
