5.0 out of 5 stars At last...the prefect combo of Sitars and Bass!, August 11, 2002
This review is from: Bollywood Funk (Audio CD)
Ever since I saw "Ghost World" and watched in awe at the opening sequence when Enid is whirling around her room to an old Bollywood song i have been obsessed with finding this.

I did purchase the "Ghost World" soundtrack which has that particular cut on it, but it wasn't enough. So, I went to the next logical step, the actual artist. Alas, the majority of Raffi's stuff is more traditional Indian music. it didn't have that quirky sorta 60's kick to it....you know, like that music from the Peter Sellers movie "The Party".

Then I came across this little gem. Although it doesn't eek of swingin sixties, it has an amazing overlay of 70's funk which makes it perfection.

I am stil searching for the perfect blend of 60's and Indian music, when I find it, I will be in Nirvana..till then, I will funk-it-up with this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great fun!, September 21, 2001
A lovely CD with some very danceable tunes; especially "Dum Maro
Dum", the theme from Shalimar, and "I love you." I have only
seen maybe 5 or 6 Hindi films in my life, but i so love the
music because of it's color and energy. My only complaint about
the CD was the lack of information on each of the songs. Nothing
mentioned about performer, when they were released, from what
movie, etc. More details would have been nice, but this is still
a fine collection of "filmi" music. Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dope!, November 8, 2001
By "jackswagger" (San Francisco, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Bollywood Funk (Audio CD)
I picked this up on a whim after becoming enamored with all the Bollywood clips that are televised every Sunday on SF basic cable.

There is something enchanting about the female vocal style in Indian music and when you couple that with those ill Eastern melodies you can't stray too far from dope. Of course, this disc also promises funk and actually brings it, which makes this one a five star affair in my book.

This collection features grainy love tunes, incidental muzak, and theme music from various Bollywood flicks from the 70's when the emphasis always locked on the groove. The recordings aren't always pristine in fact, many seem to have been left out in the sun for 20 yrs. before being put to disc. But that just adds to the whole-"obscure cool" thang the kids so love these days.

The songs are a decent mix of vocals and instrumentals. Track 4-"Shalimar" is perfect in every way. It's a cinefunk masterpiece replete with electric sitar, tight drum and bass, horn solo, and Ennio Morricone style vocal stings.

Pick it up!
