Editorial Reviews

About the Artist
Formed in 1995, Headboard is an alt. rock-pop-rap group out of Northern California. They have played over 350 shows in the past four years, and appeared on USA's Farmclub.com television show.

Product Description
Headboard's fourth CD, and second full length album, "Nothing is Static" combines melodic hooks with an assortment of styles and spoken/rap-like delivery that ranges from mellow to fierce. With male and female vocals, alt. rock guitars, jazzy bass, and everything from rock to rap drums, the CD has a dark pop tinge that puts a new spin on all things considered rap-rock.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid effort from a constantly evolving alternative ensemble, August 27, 2000
By Derek Slater (Santa Rosa, CA United States) - See all my reviews
Headboard is an alternative music group from Petaluma. Formed in 1995, they've played 250 shows in and around California, including many shows within Sonoma County. Mixing male and female vocals, pop-rock harmonies and rap, and moody, introspective lyrics with upbeat tunes, Headboard's newest album "Nothing is Static" has something for everybody. In "A Thousand Nowheres," lead singer and frontman Glenn Rubenstein softly sings, while on "Sad But True," his lyrics come fast and furious. The energized pop guitar riff in "Stuck on the Ground" forms a stark contrast with the rap and bass beat on "Sometimes." You'll see a new aspect of Headboard's musical talents in almost every song. In some ways, that hurts this album because as soon as you find a song that you really like, you might find an opposing song that bores you. Still, most of the songs are so catchy and easy to listen to that you'll be pleased with the contrast of sounds. You can't help but tap your feet and bob your head to the beats in such songs as "Two" and "Just Can't Walk Away." The key to Headboard is the balance between female vocalist Christine Alexander and Rubenstein. Rubenstein provides a rougher tone, while Alexander has a smoother, more refined sound. Alexander sings some absolutely beautiful melodies in the choruses. Most surprising, though, is how well their voices both blend into the Josh Gooch's guitar riffs and Nate Weiner's drum beats. If you're tired of bands who make one hit single and reproduce it as 12 different songs on their album (honestly, has Korn made more than 3 different songs?), then Headboard is the band for you. They provide a very fresh, energized sound and that will keep you interested from the beginning to the end of this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Headboard has got it, March 18, 2001
By A Customer
Headboard has a great feel to it, with the two leads playing beatifully off of each other. I have heard most fo their old stuff, from Straight Edge Chick sXe to Tell Me How to The End Is Near, they almost always manage to come up with a new and original sound. From rock-style guitar and vocals to rap beats that are stunning to techno like sounding backgrounds in Brake On, Headboard is always good. They move from pumped to mellow, and have considerable skill at both levels. I loved this latest CD most of all, with Tell Me How remaining my favorite song of theirs. I hope they play in DC sometime soon.
