Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Djam Karet is one of the few groups holding onto the progressive-music torch who aren't looking backward. This reissue of a 1989 release still sounds fresh a decade later, as it opens with the roar of an engine and then never lets up on the throttle. It's powered by the syncro-mesh of drummer Chuck Oken Jr. and bassist Henry J. Osborne, who lock into complex polyrhythmic, multipart compositions with a juggernaut intensity and then spin on a dime in another direction. Riding herd on this maelstrom are guitarists Gayle Ellett and Mike Henderson. Their sinewy solos swirl in refractions of electricity. On the Moroccan rhythms of "Fall of the Monkey Walk," their siren feedback guitars intertwine in long glissandos like elegant scrawls of light on slow-speed film. Djam Karet still show their influences on "The Sky Opens Twice." Split in two parts, one nods toward King Crimson, the other bows to the swirling organ and mantra-blues rhythms of early Pink Floyd. The title cut loses steam, although the train that rides through the middle, recorded right outside their studio, is a nice touch. --John Diliberto

4.0 out of 5 stars Top-Notch Prog-Rock/Fusion Band, April 6, 2001
By MICHEL LARA "miche72" (MIAMI, FLORIDA United States) - See all my reviews
Djam Karet's music is without a doubt one the unique sounds out in the Prog-Rock scene. Released in 1989 this recording brings out what Djam Karet is all about-Floydian dreamscapes intersect with the complexity of King Crimson but without sounding the same; also mix in with brilliant improv-guitars from Gayle Ellet & Mike Henderson, the incredible sound from Henry Osbourne's bass and the tribal-like percussion & drums' sound from Chuck Oken Jr.On this Cd you can expect the guitars which is the backbone, but the the wall of sound is completed by adding keyboards, sampling and tapes. Favorite tracks-The Sky Opens Twice,Run Cerberus Run,Reflections from the Firepool&Fall of the Monkeywalk. For beginners they can start with The Devouring(1997)in my opinion their best recording so far or Live at Orion(1999)where they cover all their previous albums. Djam Karet is my favorite band nowadays and you can support them by logging in at their website www.DjamKaret.com where you can listen to complete sound samples from all their CDs. Their next output is titled New Dark Age due out in June/2001.
