2.0 out of 5 stars In a Regular Developed Town Don't Expect Miracles With These, January 1, 2001
By A Customer
I own a pair of both the Motorola FR60 and the Audiovox GMRS1525. Fisrt off I live in a regular developed town you would find anywhere. No hi-rises or anything like that. Motorola makes a great radio. Incoming messages are so crisp and clear and I have yet to get a static filled transmission. The only problem is I couldn't get the range needed. The Motorola, which is a "2 mile" radio gets just shy of a half mile and then there is nothing. No faint signal, no static, nothing. I received as a gift a set of the Audiovox GMRS1525 "5 mile" radios and I can get about a mile before the breaking up and static is so bad you can't receive an audible message. Even at a half mile there is a considerable amount of static, somthing you never get on the Motorola's. Unless you are living in the flat wide open plains of the midwest I would advise that you try someone elses radios first or keep the receipt and know the return policy from where you bought them. They may work fine but then again may not give you near what you hope for. I give the Audiovox 2 stars because of the transmission quality being far less than the cheaper 2 mile Motorolas when tested at the same time, same distance. I also think struggling to get a mile is not what a consumer expects when hyped as 5 mile radios. These Audiovox radios should be labeled "up to 2 miles, and in optimum cases you may experience up to 5 miles." Don't expect miracles, you might not get them.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best "FRS-GMRS hybrid" 2-way radio ever!, October 30, 2000
By Randy Aldeguer (Philippines) - See all my reviews
I have yet to see another FRS/GMRS radio built like the Audiovox 1525. It's range capability alone outclasses even the more expensive Talkabouts, Walkabouts, whatever! We just came from a vacation at the Subic Bay Resort (ex-naval base) which has mountains, forests, beaches, a golf course and any other kind of terrain you can think of. Our large family usually splits up and go their own ways. In one typical morning, I could be in the beach with kids and still get to talk -clearly- to my wife and her sisters who are out shopping in the duty-free malls 4-5 kilometers away. On the other hand, my in-laws (using other brands)who were out in the golf course always had a hard time reaching the others in the club house just about a kilometer and a half away! Even the sleek and solid design of the GMRS-1525 makes it a better choice than the others which look more like toys. I've handled similar brands and noted all their features (i.e. channel scan/lock, VOX, rechargeable batts, etc.), but "ounce-for-ounce" I can really say that the pair I have is superior.

2.0 out of 5 stars You'll get what you paid for, March 15, 2001
In short, this radio specs are misleading. There are plenty of good features that comes with the radio. The the radio is not up to specification listed. The radio advertise output of 2W ERP, with test equipment I can only measure about .75W. using the included NiMH batteries. Good part about that is it will not drain the batteries as fast as expected.

NOTE: A GMRS license is require and that cost another $85.

It defeats the purpose of getting a higher power radio service like GMRS. Mind as well spend the money and get a real GMRS radio like the Kenwood TK-3101 or not spend the money and get a plain FRS radio for less money.
