3.0 out of 5 stars Finally, the End of Series 7. Now bring us Rimmer!!!, April 4, 2003
By "lothodies" (Lakewood, CO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Red Dwarf VII - Byte Three [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This tape marks the end of series 7. Thank God. If I had to sit through one more episode without funny gags and an entertaining plot I was going to have to cut my own arm off. If you're just starting your Red Dwarf adventures DON'T START HERE. Start with some earlier tapes and buy or rent series 7 if you absolutely can't get enough. I myself found this tape as nothing more than a way to set up series 8 and though I can't hate it because I love Red Dwarf too much I do think that if you begin your adventure here you'll end up not liking Red Dwarf very much.
The first episode is "Epideme" - and does have a couple funny places but for the most part just grosses me out. The virus is also very annoying.
I don't remember the name of the second episode, but basically it could be called "resurrection of the Dwarf." This episode sets up series 8 and that's about it.
The last segment on the tape is Red Dwarf A-Z, which is a nostalgic look back at the series with interviews from the likes of Patrick Stewart and others.
Although it's sad this tape will probably only get watched a couple times and then sit on your shelf just so you can say you have the whole series. There are better tapes, and a good place to start may be with the recently released DVD collection. So far series I and II are out and they say they will release one per year at the minimum. Also, don't forget there will be a Red Dwarf movie coming soon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Best part is the "Scrapbook" at the end, June 10, 2002
By hamilcar barca (nowheres in particular) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Red Dwarf VII - Byte Three [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This tape features the last 2 episodes of series 7 as well as a short scrapbook called Red Dwarf A-Z. Seriously, these are 2 of the worst Red Dwarf episodes from before series 8.
"Epideme" - Lister contracts a virus after getting snogged by a 3 million year old zombie that they find frozen on a derelict... I don't like this episode much. It really isn't all that funny and the voice of the virus is grating i have to turn down the volume when he talks.<BR... not terribly funny, but knid of inventive. this was the series in which Red Dwarf became more space adventure than space comedy.
"Red Dwarf A-Z" - Some really interesting stuff is included here like interviews and scenes from a Red Dwarf convention. I can't believe that Patrick Stewart sits around his house all day waiting to find a show that he can sue.

3.0 out of 5 stars Almost, but not quite., October 19, 2000
This review is from: Red Dwarf VII - Byte Three [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Hey, Red Dwarf is awesome, period. However, this is where some of the sparkle wears off. The absence of Chris Barrie portraying Rimmer is keenly felt. Though, Kochanski is very loveable and easily fits in with the Red Dwarf team, you just can't replace Rimmer.

The first episode is Epideme in which Lister contracts a killer virus. There are a few funny lines and cool gags, but the story line is weak and all you want is to go back in time. The wonderful thing that you can feel in this tape is the the evolving of the Cat. At the very beginning he is only interesting in investigating and making things his. Now, he is found steering Starbug and going on missions with them, and while that happened a while ago. Now that Rimmer is gone, you especially notice it.

The second episode is one in which Lister's limb has been hacked off. This does present a problem. But an astonishing revelation along with the recovery of Holly thankfully wraps this episode up with an okay ending. But, another cliffhanger is presented and you can't help but feel irritated at Grant&Naylor.

On the whole if you are a true Red Dwarf fan, you want to buy this to complete the rest that you have and for the truly funny things in it that all Dwarfers must own.
