4.0 out of 5 stars The Daleks: A Review, October 20, 2000
By Oliver Martin (W.London, England) - See all my reviews
Both stories are interesting landmarks in the Dr Who cannon! The Chase, from 1965 sees the departure of the Doctor's first two companions, Ian and Barara. As the title suggests, the Doctor is pursued through time and space by the Daleks across six episodes. In my opinion this is a bit of a thin plot and drags out somewhat, perhaps only the presence of the Daleks making it watchable! None the less it does improve in the final two episodes. Rememberance Of The Daleks on the other hand is excellent! The Doctor(now in his 7th regeneration)returns to earth for the Hand Of Omega on the day he left (23/11/1963)and ends up in the middle of a Dalek war, also over the Hand of Omega. By Dr Who standards, the visual effects are good, it is the first story in Nicam Stereo, it opened the 25th Anniversary season and contains the classic scene where we see a Dalek climb the stairs for the first time! Not forgeting the Dalek's History book detailing all of the Doctor's on-screen confrontations, an interesting read for the avid fan!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Planet of Decision.(Some ambiguous spoilers ahead.), September 15, 2007
Season 2.
The Doctor managers to repair the Time-Space Visualiser he aquired from the Space Museum. And offers his companions the unique opportunity of viewing scenes from history,
Ian chooses Abraham Lincoln reciting the Gettysburg Address.
Barbara chooses Elizabeth I's court where Shakespeare and Bacon are vying for posterity.
Vicki chooses to see the greatest "classical" pop group of all time.
The Tardis lands on the twin-sunned planet Aridius (once a waterworld), whilst the Doctor and Barbara sunbathe Ian and Vicki go off exploring.
Within minutes of Ian and Vicki leaving the Visualiser switches itself back on, and shows the Doctor and Barbara a Dalek execution squad leaving Skaro in persuit. The Doctor must find Ian and Vicki and warn them but a sandstorm has covered their tracks!
~~~~
Ep.1-The Executioners, The Dalek execution squad close in.
Ep.2-The Death of Time, The Aridians are coercied by the Daleks into handing over the time travellers.
Ep.3-Flight through Eternity, The Tardis lands on the Marie Celeste and a mystery is explained.
Ep.4-Journey into Terror, A haunted house is explored revealing it's "monstrous" occupants.
Ep.5-The Death of Doctor Who, The death of Doctor Who,but which one?
Ep.6-The Planet of Decision, Enter,enter,zero, stop the Mechonoids introduce themselves. But the Daleks don't like them.
~~~~
This, as the title implies is nothing more then a simple straight forward chase story. But several things redeem it, the leaving of two of the most realistic companions in the shows history. Their enjoyment with each others company is particularly convincing, and so is the Doctor's sadness as he watches them on the Space-time Visualiser.
The continously changing locations also help the story along.
The Mechonoid design was original and eye-catching,(as an Eight year old I remember being particulary gobsmacked when they came on.)there was nothing on TV like them in those days. The only thing that prevented their comeback was the narrowness of the BBC studio doors.
If you liked the characters of Ian and Barbara you should buy this.
Airdate:~ 22/5/65-26/6/65.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Five Stars Are For The Chase, December 15, 2001
By A Customer
This video collects The Chase, a classic Hartnell gem, and Remembrance of the Daleks, a campy, overrated episode that should have never been made, along with the rest of the McCoy era. The Chase has a lot of great character interaction, and the chemistry between the first Doctor, Ian, and Barbara was never better than in this story. This is one of the most fun Who stories to watch, the Daleks really steal the show in this one. The Doctor's "double" makes for a great laugh, and the constant chase theme keeps the story moving at a good pace. There are also some scenes that are very serious, such as Ian and Barbara's sad departure. The Doctor seems genuinely upset that he has to lose his last two original companions, probably echoing William Hartnell's own feelings. Overall, a classic story that deserves higher praises than it gets. Sure, it's campy, but it was made in the 60's, so this is forgivable. Remembrance, however, has no such defense in its case. Why so many people like this story always eludes me. Sure, it might be the best story of the McCoy era(which isn't saying much), and it might feature the Daleks, but it is still terrible. The Daleks are at their worst ever here, everything they say is cliched and stupid, and they even look worse than ever, like they were actually made out of trash cans. Davros is also at his worst, at least in other stories he did more than just rant. Then, we have Sylvester McCoy, who puts in his usual bad performance as the Doctor, with his "trying to be dark and mysterious" persona, even though we've already seen him act like a complete idiot in earlier stories. This story couldn't even get continuity right, the last time we saw Davros he was being arrested by the Daleks, yet in this story not only does he have another Dalek force serving him, but his Daleks are called "Imperial Daleks" and the originals are called "Renegades". Even if we assumed Davros escaped, shouldn't it be the other way around? This was either the result of sloppy editing or there is some gigantic backstory that they don't bother to tell us about, which seems to be the signature of the McCoy era. Either way, it is bad storytelling. Then the Black Dalek blows up just because the Doctor tells him he's the only one left, and the Dalek just takes his word for it. If Daleks were this easy to defeat, why doesn't the Doctor just get the leader alone and tell him he's the last one every time? And the self-mocking, ridiculous scene that shows the Dalek climbing stairs isn't worth the cheesy special effects that were wasted on it. The 60's setting would show some promise if the story itself was better, but it's just not enough to save it. Then we have the Hand of Omega, some cliched Gallifrey weapon, that isn't even really explained, but we find out that it gives baseball bats cheesy special effects and destroys bad guy planets. Too bad the Thals must have been destroyed too, I guess the Doctor, who always seems to know everything that's going to happen in every story by this point, was to busy predicting the future to think about them. Ace would have been a much better companion if she was with a different Doctor, but stuck with this loser, it's no wonder she wasn't enough to save the show from cancellation. Fans of the series must have been so desperate for a good episode by this point that they just latched on to this one, because it is a notch above McCoy's other barely watchable episodes. Hopefully when they read this review they will realize their mistake, and see that far from being the best Dalek story, that this is the worst. Remembrance of the Daleks was an apt title, as both the Daleks and the show were truly dead by this point. As it is, the only reason to purchase this box set is for the Hartnell story. Also, these should have been sold separately, so you wouldn't have to be infuriated trying to decide where to put this on your Who video shelf.
