Biography

Few rock guitarists possess a playing style as instantly recognizable as Queen's Brian May. With his orchestrated guitar armies (multi-tracked guitar lines overdubbed on top of each other) and instantly memorable, well-constructed melodic leads, May is in a class all by himself. Born in Hampton, Middlesex, in July 1947, May showed an interest in music at a very early age -- learning to play the… Read more in Amazon's Brian May Store

4.0 out of 5 stars Haunting, November 23, 2000
By Michael Allred (Niles, Michigan United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Furia (Audio CD)
First thing that needs to be said, this is the first movie score Brian has ever written solo. This is not to be confused with other film scores such as "Dr. Giggles" or "The Road Warrior". Those were written by an Australian composer who's name was also "Brian May". "Furia" is the only score done by QUEEN's Brian May.Now Brian was always the best at writing the *music* from Queen and I've been looking forward to hearing him work with an orchestra. He does NOT let you down.I know very little about the French film is was made for, other than it is a rather dark and violent piece. Brian's score evokes the right emotions then as it is both sad, moody, dark and haunting. I say haunting and mean it. It stays with you, the music follows you down into the core of your soul. It's the kind of beauty that could've been used to have tamed Frankenstein's monster. The theme is used throughout the music, just differently and in a subtle way. The flute solo evokes memories of tragic love stories and would be perfect for "Romeo and Juliet".Bits of the film's dialogue are used through the album to great effect."Apparition" features Emily May (Brian's daughter) on vocals and I cannot begin to describe the utter beauty of her voice...filled with such a sadness and longing it has made me cry on several listens. "Continuer" uses the same vocals again but accompanied by a full orchestra....a movie score masterpiece!"Dream of Thee" is the only track where proper singing takes place and Brian himself provides the vocals. Simply poetic and not overproduced. It's perfect. Nothing more needs to be said.Brian has shown his talent over and over again but he has outdone himself here. Magnificent and haunting, that is the key word...haunting....it will burn itself on your soul

4.0 out of 5 stars I MAY be Dreaming, November 7, 2000
This review is from: Furia (Audio CD)
Brian May's newest release consists of music that he has written for the French film "Furia". This soundtrack is similiar to the "Flash Gordon" CD by Queen in that it is mosty intrumental and it incorporates dialogue (in French), from the film. The one song containing lyrics is sung by Brian May. The song ,"Dream of Thee", is in my opinion one of the strongest songs that Brian May has ever written, and this includes his material with Queen. The song is a stirring ballad and it features one of Brian May's most passionate vocal performances. "Dream Of Thee" alone makes this CD a worth while purchase. The remainder of the CD contains the score to the film. Much of the music is in the vein of traditional fim scores. However Brian May's songwriting elevates the music beyond so much of the mundane film scores being produced today. The majority of the music is performed by an orchestra, with Brian May adding his trademark guitar sound to some of the tracks. A few of the tracks incorporate electronic music that Brian May is not known for. Fans of Queen and Brian May who are expecting loud rock and roll will be disappointed. However fans of the majestic and bombastic side of Queen and Brian May will be in for a treat.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but not what I want in a Brian May album., October 17, 2001
This soundtrack is almost entirely instrumental- often a good thing when you're talking about Brian May, but most of the tracks are dramatic background filler music with variations on the same melody. There's some French dialog mixed in, which is pretty unremarkable. There are a few unusual songs mixed in that are interesting, but not very enjoyable. Maybe I was mistaken in hoping for more typical Brian May- maybe something like the songs he wrote on the Highlander /A Kind of Magic album/soundtrack. This soundtrack is more like the Flash album, only slightly more listenable. Ultimately Furia is more about the movie than about Brian May, which may be good for moviegoers, but not for me.
