Most watching A Taste of Chanukah expect the customary recounting of how the Maccabees' oil lasted eight days instead of one allowing them to defeat the Syrians. And it's no surprise when host Theodore Bikel breaks into "Oh Chanukah" in Hebrew. But women singing "Ocho Candelitas" in Spanish? Or a gospel choir joining in on "Labach Heil"? This is not your ordinary Chanukah. In fact, this eclectic celebration of the Jewish Festival of Lights musically directed by Hankus Netsky features 150 musicians from the New England Conservatory of Music. Other participants include the Boston Community Gospel Choir, Cantor Morton Shames, a klezmer band, and an irreverent latke cooking demonstration by humorist Chasia Segal, who pokes fun at pancakes, food processors, and the Internet. The families in the audience laugh, applaud, and absorb the more solemn moments of this 56-minute PBS extravaganza with equal enthusiasm. Traditionalists get their lighting of the Menorah. Rebels get an R&B version of "The Dreidle Song." Everyone leaves happy. --Kimberly Heinrichs

5.0 out of 5 stars YOU'LL LOVE IT !, November 17, 2000

I own both this VHS & the matching CD. I got it last year. I esecially love the Boston Community Gospel Choir singing Psalm 27 (The Lord is my strength and my salvation. Whom shall I fear ?) Its a joyful video concert experience, as is the CD. This will be an experience that you will want to make a tradition in your family every Chanukah. If you buy the VHS be sure to buy the CD as the CD has some selections not present on the VHS. May you be blessed as you watch and listen to this soul stirring and joyful concert. Shalom and Happy Chanukah !

5.0 out of 5 stars A joyfully eclectic concert!, December 11, 2001
What an ecelectic feast of Hanukkah music! There's something for everybody here, from traditional klezmer to a Motown Doo-Wop rendition of the Dreidel song. Not to mention a Swing trio, a Judeo-Spanish number, a Gospel-style choir, and a really funky one-man band made out of junk! Plus you'll learn how to make latkes properly, with the most important secret ingredient: Yiddische humor. Theodore Bikel narrates the show, and the songs are all subtitled for non-linguists. A fun video with great music. (If you want the music only, get the CD of the same title.)
