When it was originally released in 1995, Sell Sell Sell was such a commercial failure that David Gray's record company didn't think twice about dropping him from its roster. But because of the Welsh singer-songwriter's international breakthrough, White Ladder (recorded in his own bedroom and independently released), this transitional third album gets another airing. New converts will have a hard time identifying the lovelorn folk singer of White Ladder in the sleek surroundings here, but Sell Sell Sell still offers detectable snatches of emerging talent in the soft-spoken "Gutters Full of Rain," in the straight-laced rock of "Everytime," and in the curiously poignant "Late Night Radio." Ultimately, it's enticing, if not essential. --Aidin Vaziri

Ironically, now that he's a proven seller, fans can finally get ahold of "Sell Sell Sell" again. The title track is one of David's most powerful, scathing songs, featuring a haunting sound creted by strumming his electric guitar above the neck. Despite excellent songwriting and his always powerful voice (and even free promotional cassettes handed out at his shows during the tour to support this album) "Sell Sell Sell" marked the end of the first part of David Gray's career. While not as inorganic as "White Ladder," David does favor a heavier sound on this record, utilizing a full band on many tracks and electric guitars. His quiet, powerful songs do rear up, occasionally, and I think "Smile" is one of his best in this vein. It's a really beautiful, fragile love song. He's been playing "Late Night Radio" (a would-be hit that got a lot of rotation on Radio K in Minnesota) and "Everytime" in shows lately, but my favorites would have to be "Smile," "What Am I Doing Wrong?" and "Forever Is Tomorrow Is Today." I still like his first two records the best, but this is a great record nonetheless, and I'd recommend it to new and old fans alike.

This was the first David Gray album I owned, and I've come to regard it as perhaps his best. The standard rock and folk styles David Gray had been working with on the previous two albums are present here as well; in my opinion this is where they gel most sucessfully.

If you've only heard White Ladder, be warned that Sell Selll Sell has none of its techno-tinged stylings. The first two songs are straight-ahead electric rockers, as are several others scattered further in the album. Overall it's a more musically upbeat album than the somewhat reserved White Ladder; it's also more musically cohesive than its two predecessors (though that's splitting hairs -- all four albums are terrific.)

If you want to get just one of Mr. Gray's earlier albums, I'd recommend this one to start with.

Hello to all,
I bought white ladder, not for Babylon but for the song Nightblindness because of it's acoustic guitar work, of course, I was HOOKED and am a FAN in all senses of the word. But, I picked up Sell Sell Sell and, well, I was shocked (I had obtained Lost Songs And the EPs 92-94 previous to this one). "Faster, Sooner, Now" was shocking to hear at first but I listened to the album and it grew on me like bamboo in a tropical rainstorm; this is something that all of David's albums have done. The only thing I haven't seen is, well, David (partly because I'm totally blind but that doesn't matter at all, I'm paying the money when he comes out here, it's about the only concert I will pay that price for). Anyway, sorry, I digress quite frequently. The song that HOOKED me was "hold on to nothing," it's one of my favorites next to some of the stuff on his earlier albums. Also, "forever is tomorrow is today" is an excellent song with a good message especially now. This one is as good as the rest (all of which I will be reviewing sooner or later and I will do my best to help those deprived souls who have not picked up all his albums). I'll just sum it up this way. Like everything David Gray has done, it's worth the price, believe me! Enjoy it, I sure have, David is my favorite artist, there is just something about him, I can't wait to see him live. Oh, one more thing before I go. JUST BUY THIS AMAZING ALBUM AND ALL HIS OTHER ONES, PUT THEM ON RANDOM IN YOUR CD PLAYER, AND ENJOY DAVID!
