Nightclub two-step--not to be confused with country two-step--is a slow, romantic dance. Master instructors Robert Royston and Laureen Baldovi teach the dance from the ground up. First they teach the rhythm and basic step to music, their backs to you so you can follow easily. Then they show you how to do that move with a partner, then they add additional basic moves like the side-cross-side traveling step and some simple turns and open breaks. During later segments, they get progressively more complicated and teach a variety of graceful, intermediate moves, including new turns, open breaks, and crossovers.
Dance champions Royston and Baldovi, dressed more casually here than in their other videos ("Spin her 'til the floor smokes" T-shirts instead of costumes), are excellent instructors. They clearly explain and demonstrate moves, technique, and style so that beginners feel comfortable and capable. Their frequent joking could get old when you've watched the tape more than once, but their instruction is so solid that you'll forgive them.
As in their other videos, they do not have practice sessions to music until the end (except for the beginning rhythm practice), so beginners who never get to the intermediate steps do not have the opportunity to practice their routine to music while watching the instructors. Other than that, this is a well thought-out, well-instructed, and well-produced video for beginning dancers. --Joan Price
