5.0 out of 5 stars Works just as it should, September 2, 2002
By A Customer
I could not rewire my house. There was too much distance and too many obstructions for wireless - and I was concerned about security. I installed the Linksys phoneline router and USB phoneline adapters. Everthing installed easily. Works great. And has been working great for about a year. Slower than Ethernet (I can tell when I transfer files between PCs) - but faster than my DSL connection - which is all that matters. Anyone who wants a no new wires installation should consider this approach.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great network solution, December 16, 2001
By M. P. Barry (The Woodlands, TX) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
In the land of no basements, wiring an existing house for a home network can present problems. When Roadrunner arrived, everyone wanted access from his or her own room. We built a wired network with Linksys components (Router/firewall, switch, print server) downstairs and added a Linksys network to phoneline bridge and 3 Linksys Homelink Phoneline 10 MB USB adapters for computers upstairs in children's rooms.

Installation, primarily consisting of installing drivers and making sure network parameters were set correctly, took 15 minutes for the first one and less than half that for each of the next two. They work exactly as advertised and provide throughput at or close to rated speed. The tremendous increase over dial-up speeds (even with all of us connected to the net) is still appreciated.

The key to making home phoneline networking successful is to buy and use products from one vendor. Ignore any recommendations for mixing vendors' products on one network because doing so increases the chances of incompatibilities with default settings and means that no vendor's tech support line will help.

I would have rated the product 5 stars if it had been a little less expensive.

1.0 out of 5 stars Linksys broke the link, October 12, 2001
By A Customer
When it works, the Linksys Homelink 10M USB network adapter is an excellent product. Setup is not a problem. Once set up it vanishes into the background.

However, about six months into the life of this product, my network connection went down. My phones also went down. The phone repairman said that the jack that this Homelink was on had a short in it. My phones and the jack worked fine after I unplugged the Homelink.

I contacted linksys for a replacement under warranty, and they replaced the defective unit with one that worked for about two more months. Linksys has not responded to my second request for warranty replacement. The original still had 4 months warranty on it.

I always connect my phoneline nics and modems to the phoneline with a surge protector. It appears to me that this is a defective product.
