Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The collaboration between Patti Labelle and Diane Warren might not be as splendiferous as that of Dionne Warwick and Bacharach and David, but it is one that makes sense. Labelle is an emotional singer with an üaut;ber-dramatic approach. Warren, whose pop/soul songs ("Unbreak My Heart, "Because You Loved Me") have been hits for nearly every major female singer (including Labelle), can at her best infuse her material with a girlfriend empowerment that's equally theatrical. The result is a CD that is Oprah's slumber party--an estrogen-enhanced litany of L.U.V. delivered by a singer who can give soul to a line as hackneyed as "If I was the sun I would shine my light to light your world". It is Labelle's voice that saves When a Woman Loves from cliché city; and on the hushed title track and the disco-driven "Too Many Tears, Too Many Times," Labelle makes magic out of material that teeters toward the mushy. --Amy Linden

5.0 out of 5 stars Get's no better than this....., October 18, 2000
By E. Deas (Middletown, CT) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
WHEN A WOMAN LOVES....what an album. This is Patti at her absolute best. I must admit that when I first listened to the cd i thought it was just ok...but now, I can't stop playing this cd. The album was written entirely by Diane Warren and tracks were produced by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis; Hex Hector & Mac Quayle; & Khris Kellow. The album starts with THE KITCHEN (patti getting a phone call from her girlfriend) and then moves into WHEN A WOMAN LOVES...a beautiful ballad....Then there's another skit where Patti talks about her dogs...and then we go into the beautiful Tamia remake MAKE TONIGHT BEAUTIFUL..next is IF I WAS A RIVER, another nice ballad....Then we get to the masterpiece WHY DO WE HURT EACH OTHER..this has got to be my favorite song on the cd....Patti sings like she has never sang before with great ad libs by Big Jim Wright...Next it's time to get up and move..and it starts with TOO MANY TEARS, TOO MANY TIMES....and then moves to the FUNKY "CALL ME GONE"...Patti being right at home with Jimmy & Terry..TIME WILL was my least favorite when I first listened to the cd...sounds like a leftover from Cher's BELIEVE cd...but I find myself singing it....it's a very catchy song. The remainder of the cd are ballads...TELL ME WHERE IT HURTS is a very nice song, kinda reminds me of KISS AWAY THE PAIN...then another JIMMY & TERRY produced ballad, I'D STILL LOVE YOU MORE with background again by Big Jim Wright with Lisa Keith & Patti...Then comes Patti's remake of the Taylor Dayne hit LOVE WILL LEAD YOU BACK...Patti takes the song and makes it her own... The album closes as it opens with WHEN A WOMAN LOVES (reprise)..

Don't sleep on this cd because all the songs were written by Diane Warren....This is definantely Patti at her very best!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Voice that Will Blow you Away, November 14, 2000
By Jared (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
Let's see...Patti is 56 and can still blow away every other singer out there. (an accomplishment all by itself) Her fans will shed many tears of joy after listening to her newest release "When A Woman Loves." Completely penned by Diane Warren (How Do I Live, Unbreak My Heart), When A Woman Loves takes the listener on an emotional journey of love and loss. Patti effortlessly drives home every song, hitting every high note possible. This is a true diva at work here folks! The dance songs are a nice change (Time Will, and Too Many Tears) and definitely need some remixes for peak hour frenzy on the dancefloors. The highlight of this CD is "If I Was A River." This stunning ballad marks some of Warren's best lyrics ever and Patti's vocals soar like you've never heard before. Originally performed by Australian chanteuse Tina Arena, "River" is worth the price of the CD alone. (If you care about pop music at all, you'll check out Tina Arena's "In Deep" cd and hear the original form in all of it's 6 minute glory!) Only drawback on this CD is that some of the tunes begin to mesh together. There isn't as much diversity on a CD written by only one songwriter. But, Ms. Warren knows her stuff and will be around for a very long time. More collaborations with Patti are simply the icing on the cake!

5.0 out of 5 stars When a Woman Loves-the story, December 10, 2000
By M. J. Moore (Chicago, Illinois United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Patti LaBelle's "When a Woman Loves" released on October 24 is her best cd and one of the best out there. The cd contains powerhouse ballads that only Miss Patti LaBelle can do and uptempo dance cuts including the AC Urban Radio hit-"Call Me Gone". The story-like cd, which is dedicated to all the women and for the fellas who want to learn how to love a woman and treat her right, begins with "The Kitchen" where Patti talks to one of her friends about the kind of man she wants. Then the cd goes into the title track When A Woman Loves. This mellow ballad is the theme of the cd and yes Patti does use her powerful lungs on here. The nest song is one of those baby-making songs. Make Tonight Beautiful is nothing short of umm. beautiful. It's got a nice beat and it just makes you want to be with the one you love or find someone to love. The nest song If I Was a River is almost everyone's favorite. Yes it is a ballad and yes Patti does work this. Lets see, she holds a few long notes and does one of those showstopping interludes in the song. This is worth buying the cd. Why Do We Hurt Each Other is a mid-tempo song that talks about well look at the title but she does another interlude in here too where she shows off her vocal acrobatics. The dance tune Too Many Tears, Too Many Times really sounds like alot of the stuff that is out there now and Patti does not sound out of place singing it. Call Me Gone is a song to get just to dance. I mean the background vocals and the... this song is good. Time Will is a dance song and a good one at that. Tell Me Where It Hurts is another favorite and this mid-tempo song. Its great. Patti subdues her vocals to just let the beat take over. Ill Still Love You More and Love Will Lead You Back are covers of Trisha Yearwood and Taylor Dayne respectively and yes Patti tears them up. If you happen to like their version...hers is better or if you dont well hers is good. There is a little enlightenment talk for women and the cd closes with the title track to sum up the whole story. If you dont have the cd then go get it. When you hear you have to ask yourself is patti 56? Cuz the diva still has it all-voice and looks. Lovely Christmas present.
