Product Description

Amazon.com Review
On-the-go business professionals are constantly looking for more ways to stay connected to e-mail, incoming stock quotes, and other online information using their handhelds. But many connectivity options have had limitations, such as e-mail that's received only through a proprietary service, or access to the Web confined to partner sites. If you're a Handspring user, the OmniSky Minstrel S wireless modem Springboard module is cause for rejoicing.

You'll first need to charge the Minstrel S, which takes only about two hours (an AC adapter is included). The charge will typically last about 10 to 12 hours, and we found this was worth several days of usage during lunch and on bus commutes. While the unit charged, we set up our OmniSky service, which features unlimited usage time and is priced at $39.95 monthly or $399.95 for a 12-month subscription. We then simply slipped the Minstrel S into the Springboard expansion slot, installed the OmniSky software onto our Visor (you'll need 1.5 MB free on your Visor), and were connected almost immediately.

It's important to note that the Minstrel S requires either a Handspring Visor Platinum or Prism. It won't work with the Visor Deluxe or the regular 2 MB version of the Visor because the Minstrel S requires Palm OS 3.3 or above (the older Visors run version 3.1, and you can't upgrade the OS with anything more than patch files).

To get to the OmniSky home page, you just tap the icon in the Handspring home section or press the lone button on the Minstrel S modem. Connection was seamless, and downloading content from the CDPD wireless network seemed plenty fast at 19.2 Kpbs (since we were viewing mainly just text). The OmniSky home page provided a list of information subjects with links to partners who provide content that has been optimized for the Palm OS (they currently boast nearly 1,000 sites). For instance, choosing Variety.com under Entertainment brought us a neatly organized list of the day's headlines.

It can get a little dicey when you visit sites outside of the partner list. Site layouts can get quite jumbled or awkwardly spread out, and you'll even see normally hidden information, such as search meta tags. Despite the visual funkiness, we were able to catch up on the latest UK soccer news via BBC just fine.

The strength of the OmniSky is its e-mail support, which provides connection to POP3, AOL, and Yahoo! e-mail accounts. We easily configured the OmniSky to pick up our EarthLink and Yahoo! e-mail accounts, and we were able to set up separate in-box folders. OmniSky downloads just the first 1,000 characters of each e-mail, and that's typically enough, though you also have the option of downloading the full text. (Unless you choose to delete mail from a server, the e-mail you view via OmniSky will also be downloaded by your desktop PC.)

If you're a road warrior, the OmniSky Minstrel S will send you into battle with the necessary communication tools. You'll be able to keep up with what's happening back in the office, as well as check in on stocks and airline schedules quickly and without any connection headache. --Agen G.N. Schmitz

Pros:

  • E-mail support for wide range of services, including AOL
  • Good list of optimized partner content
  • Long-lasting power supply from rechargeable battery
Cons:
  • Viewing Web content outside of partner list isn't perfect

3.0 out of 5 stars Good product, bad CDPD coverage., December 25, 2000
By A Customer
I bought a Handspring Visor Platinum along with this modem to allow me to access my email remotely around the city. My cell phone has NO coverage problems ANYWHERE in the area. The OmniSky service and this modem has coverage problems almost EVERYWHERE in the area. After reading many online reviews I swapped out the useless stub antenna on the modem with one that is longer, from my cell phone. This helped improve access dramatically. However, even being outdoors within 1000 feet of a cell tower (GTE is my OmniSky CDPD carrier) I had trouble. Literally, if I coughed (and my hand shook) I would lose the connection! I'm NOT kidding. When you are in a sweet spot, and it works, it works great. But the problem is that sweet spot usually entails me standing with my arm out-stretched holding my Visor up in the air like the Statue of Liberty! This is NOT a good thing. I think Omnisky (and Novatel) are on the right track, but this technology is still in its infancy. My advice, unless you need access on the road where you KNOW you will have good coverage, expect to "work" with this a bit. Technogeeks, apply, but do NOT buy this for your Mom! I must also mention, that OmniSky tech support is EXCELLENT! They answer the phone quickly and they actually know the software and hardware! I've always been happy with them, it's just the CDPD coverage that stinks. If I could rate them separately, the modem would get 4 stars and the coverage would get 1 star.

1.0 out of 5 stars NO LONGER USABLE, February 3, 2004
By Clayton J Knight (Gunter AFB, AL United States) - See all my reviews
I just purchased this item and it arrived today (2/2/2004). I called in to activate, and according to the operator (omnisky no longer exists, it's now Earthlink which should have told me it wasn't worth the hassle to begin with) no one supports the omnisky wireless modem any longer. Just a warning to those who purchase this item... think you're getting a hot deal?? nah... just a useless paperweight worth 80 bucks...

5.0 out of 5 stars outstanding, March 12, 2001
By J Talbott (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) - See all my reviews
To all looking at this pruduct. It is very good. I was concerned with the other reviews. Omnisky is a reseller of ATT Wireless. The people who were unhappy do not have the ATT network. They should have Verizon. I work in this industry nationwide and coverage in NYC and Illinois can be spotty. I have had no problems with this modem I am in South Florida, which is ATT. The support is great with both Omnisky and Handspring. The Visor Platinum is faster than my Palm V. The modem and Omnisky filtering allows a much faster connection. I use another CDPD modem for my laptop and the 19.2 speed is slow. This is from the photos and ads. There is good news on the horizon though ATT is launching 128k connection over the CDPD network. This should be by the end of the year. Bottom line is if you like "toys" you will love it. If you use it for work, you will not ever be without it. Also you will be the envy of all of those traveling business people toting around a 10lb laptop. One last thing Omnisky software. Put the CD in your comp. enter your chosen user name and activation code. click add for your multiple mail accounts. You are wireless in ten minutes. Very easy.
