Biography

After the demise of his previous band, Snug, British songwriter Ed Harcourt launched a short-lived career as a chef while continuing to write new material. A fan of Tom Waits and Jeff Buckley, he quickly abandoned the kitchen in favor of a solo songwriting career, progressing from bass guitar -- his chief instrument with Snug -- to a number of other instruments, including the piano, guitar, banjo,… Read more in Amazon's Ed Harcourt Store

Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Debut EP release from the man who's signed to Heavenly Records out of the UK. Already getting heaps of praise in most of the British press. He's been compared with Tom Waits, Jeff Buckley & Randy Newman for his lyrics. He uses a smorgasbord of instruments, brass, strings, banjo and piano amongst others. All 6 tracks are mainly demo's / early versions that he re-recorded for his debut album 'Here Be Monsters'. 2000 release. Standard jewel case.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Harcourt music., June 2, 2001
By Erik Tjernlund (Stockholm, Sweden) - See all my reviews
It's been a long time since I've become so excited of a new artist as I am of Harcourt. Saw him live here i Stockholm, Sweden, May 2001 and it was -- for the lack of a less abused word -- magical.

Bought Maplewood a few days later and I have not played any other cd since. It's now June.

Every review or article I read about Harcourt mentions Waits, Buckley and an assortment of other singer-songwriters, but I'm not sure that is entirely correct or fair. This is Ed. This is Harcourt. Personal, creative and beautiful music with great lyrics.

Apple of my eye is the best song on the cd, but all of them are great. Yes. All of them. The only thing wrong with this release is that there are too few songs (only 6) on it, but I guess that implies hope for future records.

Beautiful. Intense. Sincere. Buy it. Buy two.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent release!, March 4, 2001
By Simone Oltolina (Morbio Inferiore, TI Switzerland) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Ed Harcourt is a masterful singer/songwriter who recorded this 6-tracks mini album in his home studio. On Maplewood he's crafted little, precious songs that are definitely woth a listen. As Amazon.co.uk states, you'll hear echoes of Tom Waits, Bono (the first time I listened to "Apple of my eye" I almost mistook the singer's voice for Bono's) and spaghetti western. The first songs reminds me of The Blue Nile but it's probably just a feel... Whatelse can I say? I wish it was a bit longer, after all he claims to have written hundreds of songs already.

5.0 out of 5 stars mapelwood, February 17, 2001
By crazyb (London, England UK) - See all my reviews
this is one of the best album that i have ever been privilaged to hear. ed harcourt is a fresh voice in the modern crazyness of indie rock. there are a number of beautiful slow song that will relax and keep you calm. i am angered by the fact that harcourt has been completly ignored by the music world despite his blatent talent for writing singing performing ...... i hope sooner rather that later he will come into his own i mean good music can't be ignored for long?
