Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Ten-year-old Sakura's adventures continue as she pursues the magic Clow Cards and the spirits they control: Jump, a violent pink creature who resembles a mutant Pokémon, bedevils a woman who sells plush toys--until Sakura brings him to heel. Episode 9 stands out as an example of sensitive storytelling. Everyone perceives the eerie specter in the woods near their school differently; Sakura sees the ghost of her mother, who died seven years ago. Recalling Yuki's advice that her mother would never put her in danger, Sakura penetrates the ruse and captures Illusion, who shows people what they desire to see. Sakura's older brother is dumbfounded when he realizes their mother's spirit actually has been watching over her. But Sakura isn't the only one pursuing the enchanted Cards. Shaoran Li, the brash new student from Hong Kong, is a distant relative of the sorcerer who created the Cards: he arrogantly insists he's the only one qualified to deal with them. Despite his protests, Sakura demonstrates her skill by capturing the powerful Lightning. Kerberos presents details about Sakura's clothes and home between episodes. Cardcaptor Sakura offers warm but never saccharine entertainment. (In Japanese with English subtitles.) Rated 13 and up, but appropriate for children three to four years younger. An edited version of these same episodes is available, entitled Cardcaptors: Power Match that's suitable for the 6-year-old crowd. --Charles Solomon

5.0 out of 5 stars And the cards keep coming!, April 30, 2001
By "scorpinac" (Fort Worth, TX) - See all my reviews
Not to be missed, this fills in the remaing gaps on what all happened _before_ Li arrived!

First up, in Episode 5, Sakura discovers that the Jump card has invaded a young shop owners wares! Worse, it pulls them altogether to form a..well..I don't want to spoil it.

Next, the Illusion card is playing with kids minds in the woods, going so far as to try and off Sakura with an image of her late mother! This one has a real tearjerker ending, folks! (And this is coming from a 23 year old male! My mom gave me defective genes, I swear!)

For the third ep., a young child is upset at an art museum for apparently altering a painting of him done by his father. Actually it's just been "occupied" by the Silent card, which really doesn't like noise... Also, Li actually makes his first appearance in this episode, in a very brief cameo.

Finally, we have the Episode the Dub starts with, Li's arrival at Sakura's school and rather brusque request for the cards collected so far, as well as the activities of the Thunder card...

So once again, if you're an addict, grab it! Bring on the third one!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Review for the "Uncut" version, July 8, 2004
(What the?...why is Amazon.com mixing up the reviews with that Cardcaptors Dvd 'Power match' with the uncut(and very differnt) version of Cardcaptor sakura. Yes, they both are Cardcaptor sakura but ones the 'Uncut version' and the highly edited 'Dub' and they both contain totally differnt episodes. Get it right Amazon!)

This is my review for the uncut version.(Five stars)
This contains episodes 5-9 of 'Cardcaptor Sakura'
In these episodes she captures 'Jump card', 'Illisuon card', 'Silent card', and the 'Thunder card'
All the episodes on here are wonderful! My favorite is the Silent card episode, its funny when they are trying to be as quiet as they can, but they keep going back outside due to the Silent card. I also love on how she captues it in the end!

It would be easier to be able to get my hands on all of the Cardcaptor Sakura DVDs if they where cheaper in price ($30 avrage price(everywere) for each DVD with only 4 uncut episodes? That outrageous! I can't afford that!)
Even though the price is rediculous, its well worth it when you get it!

Heres a review for 'Cardcaptors: Power match' (Two stars)
This is the version that has been drasicly edited for kids. This must be the most edited Anime in the US(even more edited than 'Sailor moon', and thats pretty bad...)
But they did such a wonderful job at changeing it into something new! Now Tomido(Madison) is one of the ignoed charaters(in Japan they had a doll and one of the main charaters other than Sakura) as Meling(Melin) is now one of the Cardcaptors (SHE WAS NEVER A CARDCAPTOR IN THE FIRST PLACE!!!!)
They totally changed everything(even the music/personaitys/episodes....)
I bet if you take out the 'today on Cardcaptors', all of the flashbacks, commercals, and 'the card we reveal today' you will have only 10 to 14 minutes of actual fotage of the real episode that has been dubbed(depending on how many flashback there is in an episode)

Thats why I gave it two stars.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sakura's Adventures Continue, January 21, 2002
By Saint Dubricius "Alan" (Eastern Seaboard, USA) - See all my reviews
The second volume in the Cardcaptor Sakura series, Everlasting Memories, contains episodes 5 through 8 continuing the story of ten-year old Sakura as she searches for the scattered Clow cards, a magical Tarot-like deck where each card centers around a specific power or talent. Not to be confused with the Warner Brother's Cardcaptors cartoon series, this DVD is the original, uncut Japanese release with English subtitles, the way Japanese anime should be viewed and enjoyed.

Backed by a beautiful musical soundtrack, the stories include a toy shop with possessed plush animals, a Clow card masquerading as Sakura's late mother, a Clow card inhabiting a picture in the local art gallery and the appearance of a rival who has his own plans for the Clow cards.

Parents should be aware that there is a PG-13 rating on the DVD because the need to watch subtitles requires good reading and comprehension skills. There is also some mild profanity.

One benefit to the Cardcaptor Sakura series seldom mentioned is its capability as an attractive adjunct to any Japanese language program. My three sons have already picked up some Japanese idioms and words pronounced correctly. An enterprising writer could profit by writing and publishing a companion study guide to Japanese language and culture using the Cardcaptor Sakura series as its focus.
