The four-CD Linux Mandrake 7.2 Complete edition is for those who want a Linux-based workstation for productive use--with no hassle. Its ease of installation makes it ideal for those new to Linux as well as existing Linux users.

The install process is run by MandrakeSoft's DrakX graphical installation routine. This includes DiskDrake for disk partitioning and HardDrake for hardware detection. DrakConf provides easy system configuration from the desktop. You can install from scratch, create a dual-boot Windows system, or upgrade an existing Mandrake installation--all automatically.

Among the 2,300 programs are KDE 2.2.17 (the default desktop), Star Office 5.2, the KDE 2.0 beta release, RealPlayer, USB support, and four complete Linux books in electronic format. The printed manuals, though, are completely inadequate and their indexes are a joke. Along with KDE you get the KDE 2.0 beta and Gnome (with the Sawfish window manager). The 2.4 beta kernel is included for those who want to try it (both the release 2.4 kernel and KDE 2.0.1 are now available online). CUPS makes printing much easier to configure than with LPD.

While the installer sets up local network and Internet connections for you, there's no server or development software included with this edition. For that, you need Linux Mandrake PowerPack Deluxe. Mandrake 7.2 Complete is a no-brainer to install and provides a system with everything instantly available and ready to go.
