Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Nicholas Cage stars as an investment broker who wakes up to find his swinging singles lifestyle replaced with a wife, children, and a minivan. While the Talking Heads' "Once in a Lifetime" is the perfect complement, as it accurately reflects absurd displacement, this soundtrack is most notable for containing the atmospheric Seal single, "This Could Be Heaven," and new tracks from Elvis Costello, Edwin McCain, and soundtrack veteran Danny Elfman. Two romantic classics from Chris Isaak and U2 fill out the better song selections. The remainder is a weird jump-cut of eras and styles. The Delfonics' "La La Means I Love You" and Blue Magic's "Sideshow" represent the oldies portion. Morcheeba put psychedelic R&B on the map. Mr. Big makes the case for cheesy late-night TV offers with the ultimate karaoke bar favorite "To Be with You," while Luciano Pavarotti shifts things in an operatic direction. This soundtrack is a bit like hitting the scan button on your car radio and coming up with a little of everything. --Rob O'Connor

5.0 out of 5 stars I enjoyed this soundtrack, December 10, 2000
This is a very good soundtrack. The retro tracks are great. I especially liked Once in a Lifetime by Talking Heads and Side Show by Black Magic. I also enjoyed LA LA LA LA means I love you by the Delfonics. It was really touching when Nicolas Cage sang that song in the movie The new song by Seal is really good too. The instrumentals on this soundtrack sound great too.

2.0 out of 5 stars Another Family Man Misfire!, September 21, 2002
By A Customer
Has somebody at the studio got it in for this film? The promotional campaign and packaging for the movie and the DVD release played up the broad comedy and sentiment and downplayed the tight script, the top-notch acting, and the depth and subtlety that mark this intelligent, profound and brutally honest film. The "soundtrack" whiffs, too. Is it a pop hits compilation? Fine -- then put in everything, and not just this selective and uneven mix. Is it the actual soundtrack, by Danny Elfman? Okay, then do THAT, and not just toss in two tantalizing glimpses. This CD should have been the latter, which is just breathtaking. So, we've got this odd brew, which doesn't do justice to the film or Elfman. Get the CD anyway, if only for the two lovely Elfman pieces. Then, hope and pray that someone in a postion to pull some levers at last gets smart about the music AND the movie, and begins the arduous process of ensuring that this lost gem of a film finally gets the recognition that it deserves.

4.0 out of 5 stars I loved this movie, September 26, 2003
By Tami Sprinkle (South Texas) - See all my reviews
The Family Man was great!! I liked the movie because the characters reminded me so much of myself. My one complaint is that Nicholas Cage at times seemed lost in the script-- like his lines were running him rather than the other way around. At other times, He reminded me so much of Jimmy Stewart in his clueless, "how did I get here?" role.
One of the reasons I identified with this movie was the music. It is the sort of music you might listen to in your twenties and thirties and you get the feeling that you can still be hip and have fun as a parent (which I do.)
Tia Leoni was fabulous in her role as a mother/nonprofit lawyer. She's the kind of wife anyone could hope to have.
All in all, I think to enjoy the mix of music on this cd, you first need to see this great family film. You won't waste your time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Loved the movie, some great songs
Get this for the U2 and Talking Heads songs. They are by far the best on this disk. There are some other o.k. ones and a bunch of songs you don't want to listen to again.
