Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
Consummate singer-songwriter-harmonica player Curtis Salgado has been a well-kept secret for years. Formerly lead vocalist for the Grammy-winning band Roomful of Blues, and later with Robert Cray, the Stilettos, and Santana, Salgado boasts exceptional phrasing and vocal fluency, from blues to rock to funk to soul to gospel, which are a delight to serious musicians and fans alike. After his critically acclaimed solo efforts "Curtis Salgado" (1991), "More Than You Can Chew" (1995), "Hit It and Quit It" (1997), and "Wiggle Outta This" (1999), Salgado's 2001 tour-de-force "Soul Activated" showcases not only his dynamic performance artistry, but also his superb songwriting abilities, most notably with the sublime feelgood shuffle "Summertime Life" and the plaintive "I Sleep with the TV On." Other choice cuts are Leon Russell's infectious boogie "I'd Rather Be Blind," Daryl Hall's "Every Time You Go Away," and a robust arrangement of Jimmy Cliff's reggae classic, "The Harder They Come." --Alan Greenberg

5.0 out of 5 stars Critical Health Warning At The Bottom:, March 8, 2006
Do not buy this album if you are looking for something weak-go find something by John Tesh and never speak of the blues.

This cd should come in an asbestos case.

Some of the highlights of this album are tracks 1 through 11.

My personal favorite on this album is track 4, "Summertime Life". One night after a concert I was talking to him, and he said that it was also one of his favorites. "Every time you go away" is a great cover. The words really come alive wrapped in his voice.

The last song I have to mention here is track 2- "I'd Rather Be Blind"~ "I'd rather be blind, than to see you go." Classic blues. Listen to the way he belts out the chorus. This is how it's supposed to be done.

Warning:
This music may be too strong for you- you may want to consult a physician. Side effects may include uncontrollable appreciation for his music, constant amazement, and prolonged guilt as to why you waited this long in your life to buy this album.

If you do nothing else this year, buy this album.

5.0 out of 5 stars Soulful, January 11, 2001
By A Customer
This CD features hard-driving R&B with some soulful ballads. Curtis Salgado's band is tight and on the money. Old Enough to Know Better and More Love Less Attitude are great catchy tunes to get you up dancing. He does a wonderul R&B cover of Jimmy Cliff's The Harder They Come. Lip Whippin is a jumping blues instrumental that show off Curtis Salgado's fine blues harp. There is not a weak cut on the CD. Highly recommended. (Don't miss him if you can see him live! I saw him as the opening act for George Thorogood and Steve Miller. Curtis Salgado easily blew them away!)

5.0 out of 5 stars God Gave Salgado the Blues..., October 17, 2001
By "drkristi1" (Oregon City, OR United States) - See all my reviews
I've never been disappointed with a Curtis Salgado CD, but his latest release, "Soul Activated" is a much welcomed return to the nitty gritty, swampy soulful blues for which he's acclaimed. Previous releases have included some booty-kicking rock, but NOBODY grinds the true blues like Curtis Salgado. He comes "full circle" with this CD, including an all-time favorite, "More Love, Less Attitude," which fans will remember from his Bojangle days. "Soul Activated" is pure gutsy blues, meticulously selected by Salgado. His personal investment is evident as he writes and performs an upbeat cut from a friend's favorite saying: "Sweet Jesus, Buddha Doctor." I've seen Curtis open for Bobby Bland, Jefferson Starship, and Steve Miller - - should've been reverse billing!
