Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

It's a teenage fantasy: after enduring countless auditions, five young guys from across the U.S. are chosen to be members of a boy group. They will call Orlando home. They will live together in a house while they prepare their debut album. They will work with legendary record executive Clive Davis. They will be the first to be signed to his new label. They will be filmed every step of the way. If all goes according to formula, they will also be teen heartthrobs with a few hit songs on the radio. So goes the story of O-Town, the group created for and by the ABC television show Making the Band. Taking a step past saccharine pop, O-Town venture into Michael Jackson-inspired R&B ("Girl"), piano-driven balladry ("All or Nothing," which sounds a bit like Bryan Adams), and even straight-up rock ("Love Should Be a Crime" could be sung just as easily by Jon Bon Jovi, but wouldn't sound as good). They also make endless pop culture references, especially in their single, "Liquid Dreams": "I dream about a girl who's a mix of Destiny's Child, just a little touch of Madonna's wild style, with Janet Jackson's smile / Throw in a body like a Jennifer, you've got the star of my liquid dreams." The words aren't the only playful elements here--watching them compete against boy band stalwarts the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync should be just as fun. Even with such tough competition, though, O-Town deserve a chance. With their hit show in its second season and with songs as good as "Liquid Dreams" and "The Painter," they'll get one. --Heidi Sherman

3.0 out of 5 stars my secret shame, February 22, 2001
By Jessica (Bacliff, Texas USA) - See all my reviews
okay. i'll admit it. really, it's time to step out of the dark. i am indeed addicted to o-town. it's quite pitiful actually. i didn't make plans on friday night, in anticipation of making the band. i refer to many of the guys by their full names (ashley PARKER angel. . .erik MICHAEL estrada). like any overly obsessive o-townie (i just made that up. . .clever, eh?), i know that dan miller brings the energy to the group, and that's something ikaika never offered. i acknowledge that trevor is hideously ugly, but there's something endearing about the passion he has for being in a boy band. jacob looks like a huge poser with his nail polish and dreads, but i want to marry his voice. even though they're more manufactured than any other boy band out there, and lou "call me big daaaaadyyyyy" pearlman handpicked them, this cd is infectious and addictive. that's the plain and simple darn truth. i don't like nsync, the backstreet boys, or 98 degrees, so please don't think i'm some boppin' lil girl who is only giving a positive review b/c the guys are "hottttt". (actually, most of them aren't) each song has managed to trap me. believe me, i've tried to pass this little obsession off as a joke, but. . .it's not. scary. here's a bit of insight on each song.

"liquid dreams" - so cheesy. it took me a second to realize that the whole concept of the song is *gasp* dirty. it's very easy to catch yourself singing along, though.

"every six seconds" - one of those songs that just squirms into your brain after you declare that you absolutely hate it. it's priceless to hear trevor saying seductively "halfway to the towel's as far as you get!"

"girl" - yeah, so they're not inventing the wheel here. yes, the lyrics are quite generic, but the beat and the delivery of the song is what makes it a winner.

"sexiest woman alive" - my personal favorite line is 'had sushi in japan, used to think i was the man'. if they can work japan and man into rhyming lines, it's worth a listen.

"love should be a crime" - the BEST song on the album. easily. it's better than any song a boyband has done before. really great.

"shy girl" - how many songs about a girl are on the album? hmmm, let's count. . .all 12. that doesn't mean they're any less addicting, though. this song is cute.

"all or nothing" - really pretty. i don't know if these guys really sing like that, or if big daddy pulled those vocals from studio magic.

"sensitive" - who doesn't love dan miller, pouring his heart out? c'monnnnn.

"the painter" - my least favorite song. it kinda just goes on and on and on. the ballads aren't the best part of the album. it's great b/c it's jivey, so this song doesn't win.

"take me under" - yes, jacob underwood pullin' out a writing cred. lol. this song has lyrics that border on dirty, but they are cleverly disguised so that preteenies can enjoy w/o guilt.

"all for love" - i am SO SO SO sick of this one. lol.

"baby i would" - i can't help but remember the episode of mtb when they performed this one live. the choreography. lol.

1.0 out of 5 stars Overproduced and Under-rehearsed, January 28, 2001
By "thack_mn" (Minneapolis, MN USA) - See all my reviews
Despite an affiliation with Clive Davis, the boys of O Town have faltered in my opinion. The tracks on their self-titled CD are vastly overproduced, hiding any vocal talent the guys have. More rehearsal time should have been devoted to several of the songs, especially the Diane Warren song "Baby I Would". The guys voices do not blend well. I am a huge fan of N*Sync, 98 Degrees, and BSB, but O Town doesn't live up to my expectations. Their story is compelling but it plays better on TV than on CD.

2.0 out of 5 stars All over the place, January 26, 2001
By A Customer
I honestly wanted to believe this album was going to be good. I mean here we have five guys who worked to make it. We got to see every little step they took on TV and of course you wanted to root for them. But as much as I wanted to believe I had to face reality. They are an extreme wannabe clone of N'Sync. The album goes from super sappy pop to look at me I can be down with hip-hop/r*b. The music lacks production and the music lacks a concept. The mediocre single Liquid Dreams (have you heard the lyrics!?) and the song Girl are the best songs other than that you're looking at one of the most dissapointing albums.
