Metal in the '70s was defined by greasy outcasts who didn't exactly draw a whole lot of attention from the fairer sex. Which was also the case in the '90s, with the offspring of
Metallica in ascendance. In between, however, fell the era of the unisex fashion statement and the power ballad, a tough and tender period that's captured in this 12-track compilation. Granted, selections range as far back as
Angel's 1978 contribution to melodramatic metal, "I Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore," and ahead to
Extreme's "Rest in Peace ('92)," but the lion's share of selections date back to the days when moshing was still outside the mainstream. Hardly the authoritative statement on the movement, there are nevertheless enough chart-toppers here (
Whitesnake, the
Scorpions, and
Tesla among them) to please fans who fancy a quick trip back to a time when metal wore its heart on its studded sleeve.
