Gilberto Gil, the Bahia-born superstar who cofounded the influential tropicalia movement, has blended Brazilian samba and bossa nova with rock, soul, and reggae for four decades. On this soundtrack to the film Me, You, Them, which depicts the exploits of a woman and her three husbands living in poor northeastern Brazil, Gil goes back to his folk roots. He plays and sings forro: the country music from the region depicted in the movie. The accordion-like sanfona is the primary instrument in this genre. Gil's feathery, impassioned vocals imbue the festive "Ola eu Aqui de Nova," "Bahia da Penha," and the reggae-tinged "Eperando na Janela" and Luiz Gonzaga's haunting "Juazeiro." Backed by drums, percussion, guitars, bass, keyboards, and background vocals, Gilberto Gil has shown the world another glorious musical side of his country. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful, April 23, 2001

As he has done for the last 35 years or so, Brazil's Gilberto Gil continues to make top quality music, this time in the form of a film soundtrack.

What amazed me the most after hearing the cd many times is the consistent life that the cd has. Gil, as always, weaves a glorious mix of samba, bossa nova, and traditional regional musics that are so infectious that it is impossible not to feel great upon listening to them. His skills as a songwriter, and the expert craftsmanship he puts into every song he does, continues to evolve, making him (with Caetano Veloso) the most diverse songwriter Brazil has to offer today.

Fans of traditional Brazilian folk music, as well as hard core Gil fans, will find much to savor in this cd. If you are curious about Brazilian music or are looking for something new to listen to, this will also be the cd for you. A glorious effort by one of Brazil's elder statesmen.

5.0 out of 5 stars Una musica tipica y buena!, February 6, 2002
By R. B. Penglase (Chicago, IL, USA) - See all my reviews

Sorry to disagree with Pablo, but this is Gilberto Gil returning to his roots: the forro music of Bahia's interior and, in particular, the baiao rhythm that Gil has said is at the heart of all his songs. For those who haven't heard forro, imagine a more syncopated version of Tex-Mex norteno, or polka that really swings. And here Gil mainly sticks to the basic forro line-up: accordion, the zabumba drum and the triangle. In some ways it's really Gil's tribute to Luiz Gonzaga, one of the heroes of Brazilian music and the composer of several classics on this CD. And it's truly a beautiful homage: Gonzaga wrote achingly beautiful and happy music about one of the saddest and poorest regions of Brazil. Gonzaga's 'Asa Branca' details the migration of poor northeasterners to the big city, and the bouncing 'Que Nem Jilo' is, amazingly, about heart-break. And here Gil does it all justice, updating the sound but sticking to its roots with a great back-up band that includes percussion genius Marcos Suzano and extensive contributions from saxophonist/flutist Carlos Malta. A great break from Gil's latest over-produced and over-done recent work. Buy it, you'll love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the most traditional Gilberto Gil's CD, December 13, 2005
This cd is really a collection of very traditional brazilian music. The arrangements are also very traditional in the sense that Gil does not use many unconventionl instruments like synthesizers. Only very typical instruments are used like flutes, percusions, bass and acordeon.
Very nice cd.
