Editorial Reviews

Washington Post

A hybrid of modern classical art song, world music, folk and Americana.

Product Description

As Epiphany Project, composer, John Hodian and songwriter, Bet Williams continue to turn the art song upside down in their dynamic performances. Their compositions are a unique hybrid of modern classical art song, world music, Americana and folk. Epiphany Project combines voice, piano, exotic hand percussion and electric cello for a totally “entrancing and otherworldly” sound which The Washington Post called “a kinetic and contemporary blend of poetic word play and contagious rhythms”. The New York-based ensemble has been praised for its “evocative dreamlike tone poems” full of “soulful melodies and poignant lyrics.”

With Williams’ striking four-octave range and compelling visual style and Hodian’s deeply expressive improvisational piano, their performances are highly charged, theatrical events. In concert, the music moves from delicate and intimate whispers to thundering, ecstatic climaxes.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is very beautiful music, May 24, 2001
By A Customer
The haunting vocals and perfect piano make this extremely pleasurable listening. This is music at its best: adventuresome, emotionally evocative, intelligent, unpredictable, and highly melodic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exceptional Music for heart and intellect, February 14, 2002
By A Customer
Man, can Bet Williams sing! Her phenomenal voice moves deftly from a soft vibrato to an open-throated belting-out, rivaling the likes of a Kate Bush, Happy Rhodes, or Tori Amos. Williams and John Hodian are Epiphany Project. They wrote all 14 songs, which are profound and poetic -- intelligence from and for both head and heart. Hodian is both pianist and composer -- his instrumentation is flawless and includes some of the most delicate piano and strings I've ever heard. The music moves with as much grace and power as Williams' voice, and is the perfect transport for it. One of my favorite songs on the disc, "Tubwayhun," is an ancient Aramaic translation of the beatitudes (even the liner notes and lyrics are beautifully, artfully presented) -- and listening to this is something of a beatific experience. These two are seriously good at what they do, and clearly dedicated to making music that awakens and expands -- and defines itself on its own terms.

5.0 out of 5 stars Alchemy for the Ears!!!, April 23, 2008
This is a little know group that is made up of vocalist Bet Williams and pianist John Hodian. The two combine their talents for a alchemy of music that is a delight to the ears. Each song is uniquie, so there is something for everyone. Willians' voice is and instrament that blends will with Hodian's piano. As the key lyricist[, Williams is a poet, and many of the songs could stand alone without the music, but are much more powerful with it. In my opinion, the highlight of the album is the song "Mission Bells", which to me is the perfect blend of what these two masterclass musicians can do together. This album is any music lovers must have.
