Biography

An underground Latino crew who moved from being strictly producers to make some action on the other side of the mixing board as well, the Beatnuts first hooked up in the late '80s, with Junkyard Ju-Ju (aka JuJu, born Jerry Tineo) and Psycho Les (born Lester Fernandez) being joined by Fashion (aka Kool Fashion, born Berntony Smalls). After working with the Jungle Brothers, the trio connected with… Read more in Amazon's The Beatnuts Store

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

If it were strictly about the beats, the 'Nuts would have the game on lock. For over 10 years, they've been some of rap's most reliable track masters, hooking up tasty bits of musical treats. Their style has remained relatively unchanged, kept simple with infectious loops, crackling breakbeats, and party-anthem lyrics that don't run deep but don't have too. But with each new album, the 'Nuts wear their own style out from the recycling. Sure, the music still has flavor--check the darting flute loop in "Mayonnaise" or bounce to the energetic vocal chorus on "No Escapin' This"--but Psycho Les and Juju have played themselves out like the XFL: all style, no substance. They're far from the only ones kickin' juvenile, misogynistic lyrics and lifeless boasting, but after four albums of the same, there's just no creative spark to relight their fire. I'm not sure what their title means, but at this point, I'd rather not take it or squeeze it. Just leave it. --Oliver Wang

5.0 out of 5 stars Fresh Nuts!, March 20, 2001
By "dj_phyre" (Chicago, IL USA) - See all my reviews
Some people like overproduced, repetitive, no talent rap wannabe's. I don't. This album is none of the above. The beats are tight, simple, and completely smooth, the rhymes are hype, witty, and original. You WILL be bouncin to this! All I can say is the album is dope folks. I've had this in my CD player for about a month, and have listened to it more times than I can count, and I'm still not sick of it. While I've put such albums as the new JT Money or Trick Daddy in, and taken them right back out a few days later, I'm STILL not tired of the 'nuts. The radio gets turned up about 5 notches when the hook from "no escapin' this" starts to play, and such songs as "it's the nuts" or "yo yo yo" have gotten more play than Hugh Heffner on my stereo. I would say this album is packin the same caliber of Outkast's Stankonia or DJ Clue's Professional Part 2. So, what are you waiting for? Check the samples, and buy this album!

Peace from Chicago

3.0 out of 5 stars Cant Feel this as much as I would like to, August 20, 2001
By Mr Joshua (Winston Salem NC) - See all my reviews
I love the beatnuts and their music, but this is not the beatnuts I have heard. This album is too commercialized and not the hardcore underground beatnuts I would like to hear. I am happy for the beatnuts and their career but when you make albums like this you loose your "real" fans. The production is nice, but once again too commercial for my taste. I only gave 3 stars because I am a beatnuts fan. If you want to tune into a real beatnuts album check out "Crazy Stoned".

5.0 out of 5 stars one the best cd's of all time !!!, July 31, 2003
By Jeff (North Vancouver, British Columbia Canada) - See all my reviews
I've been a huge fan of the Beatnuts from their 1st LP til present, and I think what makes them so good is there ability to update their sound and change with the times, this cd has shown their progress....although i am a fan of every single one of their cd's, this is the most rounded and best from start to finish. Put this cd on at a party or before u go out at night, u will love it.....by the way, if u havent seen these guys LIVE u r totally missing out, they r unbelievable !!!
