Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

One would think that Jadakiss's fleeing Puff Daddy's record label to renew his membership in the reputable Ruff Ryder camp (alongside talents DMX and Eve) would guarantee greater things to come. However, Kiss tha Game Goodbye exposes Jada's lyrical limitations rather than magnifying his talents. The album kicks off with the keyboard-heavy Swizz Beatz-produced "Jada's Got a Gun." The hook is sung to the tune of Aerosmith's "Janie's Got a Gun," but it's not so much the unoriginal chorus that grates on the nerves as it is Jadakiss's narrow gun-centric lyrical focus as he brags: "I got a gun wit' 200 shots / I'm the reason you moved your family to a whole new other block." Students of the rap game will get a healthy sampling of Jada's unparalleled diction and punch lines that flow over great beats supplied by A-list producers (Timbaland, Neptunes, and DJ Premier in this case). There's little diversity in his lyrics as he boasts in "I'm a Gangsta" "my bullets is bisexual cuz they hit niggas and bitches," while in the Snoop Dogg-aided "Cruisin'" where he threatens to spread "bullets around like chicken pox." "We Gonna Make It" is an obvious chartbuster despite utilizing the same music as Ras Kass did in the "Home Sweet Home" underground headbanger. Likewise, the album is worth purchasing to peep the Beanie Sigel dis track "Un-Hunh!" However, some will tire of Jada's gun-talk and serial-philandering routine. Jadakiss has claimed to be the best rapper on the scene since the Notorious B.I.G. passed away, but if he keeps this routine up it might be time to Kiss tha Fame goodbye. --Dalton Higgins

4.0 out of 5 stars ..., August 20, 2001
This Album is the hottest album so far in 2001. I Agree that its no Chronic, Reasonable Doubt or Illmatic though. There are obvious weak points like On My Way (Horrible Swizz hook) and I'm a Gangsta (Horrible Parle Hook). But Its still a tight album. Those of you who gave it 1 star are stupid I don't care if you think you're the biggest underground hip hop fan or whatever. I listen to guys like AZ, Cormega, Big L (R.I.P.) and Pharoe Monch too but that doesn't mean I have to think Jada's album is wack. He's one of the top 5 lyricist out there right now for sure if not top 3. Jada does songs with Timbaland and the Neptunes so now he's bubble gum? Thats just dumb everyone knows they have to put ...out to appeal to the clubs, nobody keeps it that real anymore. I mean Prodigy from Mobb Deep is in the new Destinys child video, and M.O.P. did a song with that boy band LFO, so Jadas is still better than most when it comes to that. I've never seen him on TV (MTV specificaly) except on 106th and Park and Rap City. He more than made up for those "bubble gum" tracks anyways with 2 Alchemist joints, plus a Premo track and the song with Nas. Then theres those of you that complain that hes too 1 dimensional. its a hardcore rap album for Christs sake you know going in that its gonna be guns, drugs, street tales and pimp lines. Did you expect tracks on creating world peace and saving the emvironment?Even guys like Outkast and Talib Kweli talk about a lot of the same things Jadakiss raps about in songs like "Feel Me" and "Keep Ya Head up". My point is you people complain that hes either too hard or too commercial, and need to stop hating because Jadakiss is definitely at least one of the "best since B.I.G. ain't here" Y'all just have nothing better to do than diss people you know have more talent than you could dream of having. The Best MCs like Jay-Z, Jada and Pac and Biggie before them try to take thei music to a level where everybody feels them, but idiots like you guys who claim this is the worst cd ever make it so that they could never please everyone. ...Like Kiss says "Too hard for MTV, not Black enough for BET, just let me be"

3.0 out of 5 stars More Dying than Riding?, August 11, 2001
By "dolomite2222" (Spokane, WA) - See all my reviews
Jadakiss is obviously trying to expand his horizons. "Kiss The Game Goodbye" finds Jada exploring new territory, far beyond the usual Ruff Ryder's formula. This is most evident on songs like "When Kiss Is Spittin" (which features-- for real-- Nate Dogg), "Nasty Girl" (with Carl Thomas), "Cruisin'" (Snoop Dogg), and the R&B tinged "Keep Ya Head Up", where Jada decides to provide a motivational speaker role. Ironially, the most listen-albe music on the album is the usual Ruff-Ryder sound, where Jadakiss (who i believe to be one of the most lyrically talented in the rap game) sticks to his usual rough-and-rugged style ("What You Ride For?", where guests Fiend and Yung-Wun are practically screaming). "Un-Hunh!" (with fellow RR comrade DMX), the recent single "Put Ya Hands Up", and the Nas-featured "Show Discipline"-- which has the tightest beat on the album-- are the highlights. Of course, the usual Double-R beats are on here and the whole slew of the artists (Eve, Drag-On, The Lox, who all are there on "It's Time I See You") appear as well. All in all, Ruff Ryder fans should enjoy this one, unless theyre driven off by some of the muddy production. While Kiss is trying to branch out in the rap game, he is better off sticking to Ryding Or Dying; he should kiss the rest of the sound goodbye.

5.0 out of 5 stars Jadakiss busts a tyght flow, December 23, 2003
Eyo, check it, Jada's got a tyght flow and his lyrics entice the listener. Sure some of his songs might be bad, but when was the last time you heard an album that was perfect? Of course all rappers have a give-up song, if they didn't then nobody would have a particular song they liked. But I know he's got skill and talent cuz I rhyme too and actually understand it unlike the other people who have written a review for it, who are probably rockers. Anyways I give Jadakiss two thumbs up and an ounce of coke.
