Editorial Reviews

It's hard to describe the opening scenes of The Interview without using the word "Kafka-esque," so let's just get that out of the way and focus on this truly wonderful Aussie suspense flick. Hugo Weaving, best known in the U.S. for his roles in The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and The Matrix, plays Fleming, an Everyman who is rudely awakened one morning when the police burst into his house. Fleming is roughed up, refused food, and interrogated about an unspecified offense. "Oh," you might say, "one of those." But just when you think you've got a handle on it, The Interview slips away and becomes something else again. To reveal any more would be to ruin the pleasure of watching a beautifully crafted script unfold. In addition to a fascinating plot and clever dialogue, The Interview boasts superb performances by Weaving and Tony Martin as Steele, Fleming's chief interrogator. Grab a copy and impress your friends with the little-known gem you've discovered. --Ali Davis

5.0 out of 5 stars Subtle and gripping, April 23, 2003
By "jburton75" (Dover, NH United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Interview (DVD)
I'm not even going to bother comparing this to "The Usual Suspects." This is not a hard-boiled movie like the aforementioned, but it does have moments of emotional release and stylized violence. Subtlety is the modus operandi in this film. Director Craig Monahan propels the cast toward a creepy conclusion that answers all lingering questions, yet leaves many avenues of debate open long after the film ends. I found "The Interview" to be a fascinating and insightful portrayal of flawed characters to whom I could relate in many cases. Hugo Weaving delivers some chilling work that Kevin Spacey could only dream of nailing with such believability.

In addition to top-notch acting, the cinematography was also excellent. The variation in camera angles and film speeds was again subtle and masterful in its creation of a dark, unsteady environment.

Ultimately, in my opinion, this is a movie that stays with you long after the credits roll at the end. I highly recommend it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, March 16, 2001
By Steve Stehle "pariah231" (Tucson, AZ United States) - See all my reviews

This review is from: The Interview (DVD)
Okay, I lied about having seen the DVD, but I've seen it in the theater and I thought someone should get the ball rolling with a few thoughts about the movie itself.

Hugo Weaving you will either remember from "Pricilla, Queen of the Desert" or "The Matrix" depending upon whether great cinematography and acting (in the first case) or expensive special effects and editing (in the second) opens your wallet at the local cineplex. Weaving gives an amazing, better-than-Oscar quality performance in this recent take on the police interrogation movie. In the opening scene his apartment is raided by some very aggressive police... gosh, if I tell you about it, it will lose all of its impact. Better not to tell.

Suffice it to say that if you liked "Glengary GlenRoss", "The Trial", "Under Suspicion" and/or "The Usual Suspects", if you like to see an actor wrap himself around a role, and if you like a nice plot twist or two, buy this film. Twice.

5.0 out of 5 stars magnificently creepy, June 24, 2006

This one had me; It had me in the palm of its cinematic hand from the minute it began until the second it was over;I was riveted by what I was watching and hearing. I don't usually have trouble deciphering the Aussie accent but i must admit to a spot of bother once or twice here; good thing I watched it on DVD and was able to rewind a few times. I consider this of course, MY failing totally and it has NOTHING to do with the quality of this film or the performances. THE INTERVIEW is one of the most magnificently acted movies I have seen in a long time. I must confess to having never seen Hugo Weavving in anything other than the Lord Of the Rings films. Here he gives an absolutely mesmerizing performance and he's matched, scene for scene, by TONY MARTIN, an Australian actor whom I have grown to respect enormously--just based on what I saw him accomplish in this film.Powerhouse performances from he and Hugo Weaving really carry the film but that's not to say that co-writer/director Craig Monahan doesn't show a masterful sense of style and pace. This is just a fantastic movie.
