5.0 out of 5 stars Cordless Mouse performs flawlessly, May 11, 2001
By ddsn (Chicago, IL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Logitech Cordless MouseMan Optical Mouse ( 930496-0403 ) (Electronics)
I had to justify spending $70.00 on a mouse. I had never used a cordless/optical mouse. But I went out on a limb and have been VERY pleasantly surprised by my investment of the Logitech Cordless Mouseman Optical mouse.

If you are like I am, I like to keep a clean desktop. The fact that I have reduced my 'wiredness' by one cable has made all the difference. One less umbilical cord to dictate my movement while sitting at my computer.

This mouse is intuitively designed and Logitech continues to place ergonomics and quality of design as it's priority. Pleasing to the hand AND eye, a nicely weighted mouse sends a digital signal to a small receiver. This receiver can be tucked away out of sight [mine resides in the bottom of my CD/media tower approx. 38" away from the mouse]. The beauty of this digital signal is that your mouse does not have to be in a 'line of sight' to communicate. I have blocked the receiver with a coffee cup and did not experience any problem.

Another great point about this particular cordless mouse is that since it uses an optical light on the bottom [instead of a rubber ball] there is no need for a mouse pad! And there are no moving parts to have to clean. The mouse is powered by two [2] double AA batteries. The receiver can either plug into your PC's USP port, or the PS/2 port [it comes with an adapter.]

MAC users will be happy to get rid of Apple's round, flat mouse and use this MAC compatible device.

There are four configurable mouse buttons. The standard right and left, a center scroll wheel [which scrolls very smoothly and has a comfortable soft rubber feel], and a thumb button. One of the observations I first had is you can pick up the mouse without inadvertantly pressing a button...especially the thumb button which tends to be too big on some models.

Logitech ships this mouse with a CD rom with an easy install wizard allowing you to configure and 'fine tune' your mouse to your specific needs and touch. One important feature is an on-screen menu program [in the shape of a circle - like the wheel on Wheel of Fortune] that you can assign to any mouse button. This allows you a 'one-click' shortcut to standard web features like the Back Button, Refresh, Favorites/Bookmarks, Email, and frequently accessed sites. I have it configured to pop-up when I depress the mouse wheel.

I would have to say that the ability to sit in my chair, place the mouse on the desk directly in front of me, or on the arm of the chair, or even on my pant leg[!] is very refreshing. It takes some getting used to especially for us old timers, but being able to remove your mouse from your workspace (or put it in a drawer when you're done) is both novel and practical.

This device is compatible with the following systems: Windows Me, Windows 2000, Windows 98 / 95, Windows NT 4.0, Windows 3.1, and Mac OS 8.6 or later

Hope this helps you get a feel for this item. Check it out, I have been very pleased!

5.0 out of 5 stars Logitech has revolutionized the pointing device., June 13, 2001
This review is from: Logitech Cordless MouseMan Optical Mouse ( 930496-0403 ) (Electronics)
This mouse is the first of a new era; I'd be willing to bet that in 5 years, cordless optical devices will be the standard for new computer systems. At least three other hardware manufacturers- including Microsoft- are suddenly scrambling to catch up with Logitech's cordless optical mouse.

And no wonder! The performance of this device is simply AMAZING. With 800 DPI resolution, it's twice as precise as most other optical mice, and the difference in accuracy is immediately apparent. A high-resolution mouse is a real boon to anybody, but it's especially vital to graphic artists, web designers, or gamers. The response and sensitivity of the Cordless Mouseman Optical is incredible; I couldn't imagine going back to my old mouse.

This is the first cordless mouse I've ever owned. I really didn't think that a cordless would make a big difference. I was wrong- I simply had never realized how limiting a corded mouse is. Although the documentation says the mouse should be placed within 6 feet of the receiver, I've found it works reliably out to a good 10 or 12 feet- I suddenly have freedom to move. The fact that I no longer have an unsightly cord snaking back to the computer from the mouse is icing on the cake.

The mouse does require batteries, of course, but Logitech thoughtfully includes a pair in the box. Thanks to smart power conservation, you'll only need to replace the batteries every six weeks or so. (I personally use NiMH rechargeables.) A word of warning: As with any mouse, one size may not fit all. This is definitely a right-hand mouse, so if you prefer to use your left hand, you may be out of luck until a left-hand model is released. I thought the shape and button placement were perfect, and I didn't find the mouse to be too heavy or too large (I have fairly small hands myself), but your comfort zone may differ. "Try before you buy" is a smart consumer's watchword.

Once you become accustomed to this mouse, ordinary mice really do start to seem rather primitive. Even my mother, a devout technology-hater, wants one for her computer. If you only buy one upgrade for your computer this year, it should be a Cordless Mouseman Optical.

2.0 out of 5 stars Definitely not for gaming, June 18, 2001
This review is from: Logitech Cordless MouseMan Optical Mouse ( 930496-0403 ) (Electronics)
I picked up one of these mice awhile back. I had been eyeing both cordless and optical mice for some time, but had been unable to decide which to buy. When I saw this in the store I bought it immediately, thrilled that my dilemma had been solved. A week later I had returned it, very disappointed. As good as this mouse is for regular computer usage (browsing the web, getting around in Windows), it is definitely not a gamer's mouse. In several games I tried the mouse tracking speed was EXTREMELY high and couldn't be adjusted, either by in-game settings or by Windows settings. There's also a slight lag time between movement and on-screen response. Also, the optical light is off-center due to the placement of the battery compartment, making it inaccurate if you twist/swirl the mouse around a lot when gaming. However, those are minor problems compared to the biggest problem--using two relatively large batteries, the mouse is not only bulky, but quite heavy. This makes it hard to make quick movements in games, both because it's harder to get moving and harder to stop moving than traditional mice.

All in all it's a nice casual user product, and I applaud Logitech for finally putting two new mouse technologies together at last--but I definitely would advise against buying this if you're going to be doing serious gaming. While it's a fantastic upgrade if you just use Windows programs, the unresponsiveness, tracking speed problems, and bulky/heavy design make its gaming performance far below average.
