Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
This sword-and-sorcery epic was originally released in 1986, when the look of Japanese animation still displayed a pronounced Western influence. Although the characters were designed by Yoshitaka Amano, who was already well known for his work on Vampire Hunter D, Amon Saga suggests a mixture of Conan the Barbarian, Prince Valiant, and American Saturday morning TV shows. Having been trained by the "wandering poet and master swordsman" Ekuna, young Amon is a warrior of exceptional skill. He has devoted his life to avenging his mother, who was murdered by the bestial Emperor Valhiss. To fulfill his plan, he joins a ragtag group of mercenaries in Valhiss's service. In addition to dispensing any foe foolish enough to cross swords with him, Amon rescues the Princess Lichia, slays his quota of werewolves and monsters, and forges an alliance with two fellow warriors, gigantic Gaius and crafty Alcan. Their adventures are fairly standard for the genre, and the battle with the dragon kept by the emperor's sorcerer is shamelessly lifted from The Return of the Jedi. The violence seems very tame by contemporary standards, and the pacing of the film is much slower. However, Amon Saga offers one genuinely striking visual: the capitol-fortress of Valhiss, built on the back of a monstrous tortoise. "Parental discretion advised": suitable for ages 14 and up for violence, grotesque imagery, and minor nudity. --Charles Solomon

Product Description
Set in a barbarous world of magic and mysticism, this action-packed tale of intrigue and adventure follows the exploits of Amon - a young man on a desperate quest to avenge the death of his mother. When his hunt leads him to the castle of the Emperor Valhiss, Amon must endure the perils of initiation and join the ranks of the Imperial army in order to gain an opportunity to take his revenge. But once within the heart of the fortified city, Amon unexpectedly encounters the princess Lichia - the sultry daughter of King Sem Darai. It seems the Emperor hopes to exchange the princess for a map in the King's possession. But what is the Emperor's ultimate goal?

3.0 out of 5 stars Dated, tame but not the worst thing out there, July 21, 2002
By Kevin (Ottawa, ON Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Amon Saga (DVD)
OK.. to give credit where credit is due. 80s animation has to be judged as such. Amon Saga is like watching Battle of the Planets (Gatchaman) fun if you were there and remember it. I enjoyed Amon Saga, but wouldn't rank it with even the lowest of my favourite Animes.

It is a typical good vs. evil, save the damsel in distress, meet unlikely allies along the way adventure story. The action scenes lack the gore and intensity of more modern anime, the dialogue is simple and the language clean. An updated story and some deeper development would make a decent remake.

This review is from: Amon Saga (DVD)
This is a nice anime of the 80s.The story is nice but remains average. The animation look great for an old anime and theres also a small scene with Vampire Hunter D in it.
i can say i like this anime but i cant say i love it or watch it frequently but if you like old 80s anime you might as well see it.

1.0 out of 5 stars Reconsider even renting this title., June 3, 2001

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Amon Saga (DVD)
This anime, unfortunately, is very disappointing and not worth the time it takes to watch it in. I blindly bought it with the assurace of such previous Amano titles as Vampire Hunter D and Angel's Egg. But as soon as the credits started to roll I was busy thinking of ways to get my money back. This anime is everything that VHD isn't, the quintessence of trite horror anime. Just another quiet hero who is a master at the sword, however Amon, the protagonist, doesn't even seem capable of such simple criteria. He seems to require help to get out of every situation he gets himself into. Not to mention a banal "patch-plot" which tries to give the anime a point in the last five minutes of the movie. It can hardly even be played off as yet another bathos filled, campy anime with no plot and senseless action pasting the scenes together. The action scenes are just as disappointing as the anime itself with no excess blood or gore where there is plenty of opportunity and, sadly, necessity for it. Furthermore, for an anime that could use all the help it could get, there is not even an ounce of fan service which could have brought something to this bland 90 minutes. The only redeeming quality is Amano's always-inspiring character design which, while familiar, is pleasing to look at. Yet when pros and cons are juxtaposed, this anime should have stayed in the mid 80's amidst its poorly conceived brethren to possibly one day become a 8th generation fansub. At least then I could tape over it.
