5.0 out of 5 stars best linux distro, June 20, 2001
By "philcargile" (Springfield, VA United States) - See all my reviews
Linux is too hard for the casual user. Linux users don't have access to good word processing or good games. Linux doesn't have an understandable desktop.

I really got tired of hearing that. So I went out and bought Red Hat 7.1 and it's the best OS on the market, rivalling even the mighty BeOS for ease of use. Simply choose which way you want to use it, and the rest is automatic. We are starting to see some other games coming over to the Linux distros, with Loki leading the way. If all you need is a simple desktop, Red Hat will provide. If you want just an internet connection, the distro provides the amazing Konqueror, mozilla, and netscape..plus about 6 other tools.

If you want to learn more about computers, like I do, Red Hat or Mandrake is the place to begin. If you are interested in any aspect of development or of beginning to configure your own system, Red Hat is your choice. It's chock full of tools of every sort, and as with all Linux distros, you can always bring in more.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great for a power user, not a regular user, April 29, 2001
By A Customer
The choice of an OS is a very religeous subject, So dont think too much about the rating, it's either 1 or 5 depending on where you stand. If you are a developer, or a power user, very into messing with every little part of your computer. THIS IS YOUR OS! However, if you are not into those things, and you have problems with computers, and want something relatively simple with a small learning curve, use Windows, BeOS, or MacOS. Linux is still not userfriendly (took me, someone good with computers, 3 hours to get sound working, another Linux expert I know took an hour on his to get sound working). However, due to the power and low overhead you will find this a good operating system if you are familiar with any form of *nix or want a power OS. This will be what my Linux box runs.

5.0 out of 5 stars Im a Linux Convert - Its Fantastic, May 28, 2001
By Gordon Staines (Hughesdale, VIC Australia) - See all my reviews
I have been using Windows for 6 years now, and every couple of months I normally had to do the old "re-format and re-install" just to keep windows healthy and reduce the number of reboots to an acceptable level.

I always thought that it was common for an operating system to crash after a couple of hours surfing until I installed Redhat Linux 7.1 It has NEVER crashed for me! Its unbelievable!

The installation is even more advanced than Windows 2000 installation which is still largely text based. I installed and configured a dual boot system in less than 15 minutes, via the GUI installation wizard.

The range of Free GPL software for Linux is also very impressive. The only thing now is, that, unlike Microsoft, I have too much choice!!

Amazing!
